Description

Two coins  from the Seleucid Empire.Decline of the  Achaemenid Empire  occurred in 330 BC with the defeat of Darius III by Alexander the Great. The empire of Alexander shattered after his death and one of his general, Seleucus I, seized part of the conquered territory,Thus the Seleucid dynasty began.

After receiving the Mesopotamian regions of Babylonia and Assyria in 321 BC, Seleucus I began expanding his dominions to include the Near Eastern territories that encompass modern-day Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon all of which had been under Macedonian control after the fall of the former Persian Achaemenid Empire. At the Seleucid Empire's height, it had consisted of territory that had covered Anatolia, Persia, the Levant, Mesopotamia and what are now modern Kuwait, Afghanistan, and parts of Turkmenistan.

These are all bronze coins called a chalkon, normally equivalent to  the value of  1/8 of an silver Obol, and 1/48 of a silver Drachma, but this value varies through ages.

The coin on top is probably minted by Antiochos VIII(125-96BC). Obverse showes the portrait of the king or Apollo wearing rediate crown(but off-centered);reverse is an eagle, the pet and message of Zeus. Lettering: ΒΑΣΙΛEΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΟΥΣ(of King Antiochos,God Manifest)

Diameter 18mm,weight about 5 grams.

The coin on below is probably minted by Antiochos Hierax or Antiochos I Soter,or Antiochos III, it is hard to determine for the coin is fairly worn out.

Obverse is the portrait of a youthful king wearing diadem;Reverse is Apollo seats on the Omphalos(the stone that thought to be the center of the world),holding a bow. Lettering:ΒΑΣΙΛEΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ(of King Antiochos).

Diameter 15mm,weight about 3 grams.

Two coins came together for $25(including shipping).
