Description

A coin from Theodosius I,reigned from 379-395,as the last emperor to rule the entire Roman Empire before its administration was permanently split into Western Rome(ruled by his son Honorius) and Eastern Rome(ruled by his son Arcadius).

This coin cost me $18.Diameter about 22mm,rather thick and heavy.

The obverse is DN Theodosius PF AVG ; not very good portrait,looks a bit timid and too juvenile,not suitable for the title "Theodosius the Great". We can see,portraits from this time show that influence of the idealized Hellenistic art or the honest roman "Verism" is fading away, gives way to the upcoming byzantine art,which has highly stylized portrait of emperors and saints.

Reverse is "Gloria Romanorvm".,shows the emperor holding standard and globe,but is not well centered. I am quite confused by the mint mark , it reads "NNA" ,but I am not sure. Not matching abbreviation of mint marks is found yet.
