Description
I honestly could go on for hours and hours (but time is relative when you're reading not having a live discussion isn't it... uhhh... wait... where was I?) about Astro Boy, how awesome it is and specifically how damned awe inspiring The Greatest Robot in the World is.For those not familiar... basically it's a story whereby well... uhh. Okay. So here it goes: A sultan has a robot built that he wants to be the greatest in the world. To prove it the robot, Pluto (yes, named after the Roman god of Death), is to kill the 7 most powerful robots in the world.
I grew up on the 80s cartoon version. Watch it here:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
However this drawing is based on the Manga version of the story and the designs therein. Featured are the corpses of 6 robots who Pluto bested:
Mont Blanc -- from Switzerland
North #2 -- from Scotland (Molnar in the cartoon)
Brando -- from Turkey (Brondo in the cartoon)
Gerhardt -- from Germany (Zeron in the cartoon)
Hercules --from Greece
Epsilon -- from Australia (Photar in the cartoon)
The cartoon's a lot more vague about the actual origins of the characters. For example Photar (Epsilon) is not from AUSTRALIA he's from "The Southern Continent", and Brondo (Brando) is the greatest wrestler in "The East", not Turkey.

I checked out a ton of the Dark Horse Astro Boy collections from the library this week, and I just read this story today. And I cannot stop thinking about it. Obviously, I'll have to read the Urasawa manga, but for now I'm still enjoying the original classic version. I even looked up both anime adaptations on the web just to see how the story was handled. THAT'S how deep this brilliant story has its hooks into me, and this is an excellent tribute to it. As for the animated versions, I'm a little disappointed the 2003 anime strayed so much from the source material, but it was still well done. But I agree with you, the 1980 anime is definitely the best. (Plus, I just adore the hammy, flat voice acting. "He is made of a special alloy which protects him from LAY-zerrrrs!")

Excellent job here! You really did capture the look and feel of the manga! Personally the Greatest Robot in the World is one of my favorite chapters of Astro Boy infact, I've seen at least 3 different versions of the story which were from the 2003 series, 80's series and the manga version. Althogh I prefer both the 80's version and the manga version alot more!
Once again excellent work in capturing the look and feel of one my favorite Astroboy Chapters!

Seeing that I commented on your colors, I figured I should add a comment to the black and whites!
I like this piece a lot better without color. It's not that I feel the colors killed it, but it feels so much more like a tribute to "classic" Astroboy.
Without color, the tone is even more somber and Pluto's victory over these robots feels greater.
Also, a nice homage to the original comics by leaving Pluto's hands not blackened! Nice move there(I rarely see Pluto fan art, but when he's drawn, his hands are usually blackened)!
And the inevitable critique: I can't help but think that Pluto's pose could feel a little more dynamic. Not in the "he needs to have his crotch pointed out and squatting" that you see with Transformers(I see that a lot!). think it's maybe his left(our right) hand. I can't tell if the hand is just relaxed or if the fingers are curled. The fingers just "hanging" there makes the pose feel a little static.
The sudden disappearance of the background makes the image feel unfinished; but I can see how the background fading off can appear ominous, so I think that's more of a personal preference than an actual critique.
I definitely prefer the black and white version of this piece- it has a stronger feel of nostalgia to it and the battle feels more chaotic.

Bruton is such a soulless monster with a heart of gold.

Especially in Urasawa's Pluto edition... only a heartless monster can see all of his little robot kids and his wife flashing before his eyes as he dies and not cry. (Well, unless you're me, since I don't get emotional wiht manga.)
