Description It was said to be the best video game ever.  Critics have been calling it the most realistic, fun, and advanced game with such an amazing attention to detail.  The only real thing Boltro knew about it was its name...
LIFESPAN
It was said to be the greatest RPG ever made and ever to be made...and he had to have it.

Boltro was standing outside the game store in a line that seemed to never end.  The game came out a few days ago and there was still such a line.  But then again...what would you expect for something that’s been hyped this much?  He’d been waiting for hours, and there were only a few people in line in front of him waiting to go in the store.  He was practically jumping up and down with excitement; he’s wanted this game ever since he first heard about it several months ago.  He counted the number of people I front of him, subtracting as they walked into the store.
“3...2...1, I’m next!!”
He stopped jumping and put his hand on his pocket, checking to see if he still had his money.  Relieved to find it was still there, he walked into the store.
He saw what he wanted was right ahead of him when he opened the door.  He was shocked to find that the box it came in was bigger than he was!
“Let me guess,” the clerk said, “you’re here for that?”
“Yes!” Boltro shouted with excitement. “But...how am I gonna get it out of here?”
“We’ll get someone to help you with it.  But first...you got the money to pay for it?”
Boltro nodded and shuffled through his pocket, coming up to the counter and laying the money down.
“There you go, Sir!  200 dollars, paid in full!”
“Wow,” the clerk said surprisingly, “you actually paid it in cash!  Can’t tell you how many people came in here getting with a check or credit card.  Cash makes things much easier.  Alright, you’re good to go.”
He opened the change container and placed the money in, then turned around and shouted to the back.
“Frank!  We got another one that needs help with the game!”
A rather large man came out from the back, walked past the counter, and picked up the game box.  He turned his head to Boltro and asked.
“I’m taking it outside, right?  Which car is yours?”
“The green Oldsmobile...to the right.”
Without saying another word, the man walked out the door with the game and headed for the car.  Boltro followed him and opened the trunk for the man to put it in.  After he did, Boltro closed the trunk and thanked the man.  He walked off as Boltro opened the car door and jumped in.
“Okay Mom, it’s all loaded up.  And I paid for it all.”
“Good.” Luna said, sitting in the driver’s seat. “Just so you know, if it doesn’t work we’re not taking it back.”
“Oh, don’t worry Mom.  Nothing’s gonna go wrong with this game.”
Luna started the car, backed out, and started driving home.

As soon as they got home, Boltro ran to the living room and opened the box.  All the game turned out to be was a big gray door.
“What the heck?  This isn’t a ripoff, is it?”
Above the gray door was a green orb that was engraved with the word “LifeSpan”, so it couldn’t have been a trick.
“Okay, so it’s real.  But...how the heck do I play?”
The door started shaking, acting as if it was a magnet attracted to the wall.  Boltro was forced to let go, and the door clamped itself to an open part of the wall.  The door then opened, revealing a green swirling vortex.
“Okay...this is starting to creep me out.  But...is this how I play?”
Boltro turned his head to the stairs to see if his mother was coming, then turned back and slowly went into the vortex.

On the other side, everything was dark.  Boltro felt strange; he couldn’t move and he couldn’t tell where he was.  After a while, a small light formed in front of him.  The white light grew increasingly brighter and bigger until finally the darkness was gone.  It was so bright that he closed his eyes.  He felt someone’s hands around him and he started crying loudly, shocked to find how high-pitched his crying was.  He kept his eyes shut and continued crying as he felt himself be picked up, then he heard a voice.
“Hey there little fella.  Don’t worry, it’s alright.”
He stopped crying and opened his eyes, but everything was fuzzy and blurry.  Then, he dozed off and fell asleep.

When he awoke, he was in a room where the only light was that coming through the windows.  He tried to move, but he couldn’t.  He looked down.  There was a yellow blanket wrapped around everything lower than his shoulders but his arms, which were brought closely to his chest.  He felt something bulky around his area, but because of the blanket he couldn’t tell what it was.  He looked around.  The house he was in was nice.  The walls, ceiling, and floor were made of combinations of stone and wood.  But it all looked so much bigger than it should be.  He then tried to talk.  He could speak perfectly, but his voice was extremely high.
“W-...where am I?  WHAT am I?”
“You’re a newborn.” A male voice similar to his own said.
Boltro turned his head to the right, following the voice to find a gray fox kit the same size he was wrapped in a yellow blanket next to him.  The kit continued speaking.
“You just came back from the hospital...just like me.”
“W-who are you?” Boltro asked innocently.
“I’m your virtual brother.” The kit smiled.
“Virtual?  So...I’m in the game?  This is ‘LifeSpan’?”
“Yep.” The kit nodded. “I take it you’ve never played the game before.”
“Nope.  I just got it.”
“Oh, well then you wouldn’t know.  Sorry about that.  My name’s Evo.”
“Evo?”
“Well, Evo 2 actually.  This is my second time playing the game through.”
“Cool.  I’m Boltro.”
“Boltro, huh?  Nice name.”
“Yeah, it’s okay I guess.  Well...if we’re newborns, then how are we talking?”
“We’re not.” Evo replied. “It’s baby talk.  We only understand each other because we’re babies.  When our father and mother hear us, they’ll hear nothing but gibberish.”
“We...have parents?”
“Mm hmm.  You see, in this game they randomize the players and put two or three of them together in a family.  In this family, they have parents that watch over and care for them until they’re old enough to be independent.”
“How long will that be?”
“Well, it depends.  In this game, your level is your age.  We’re level 0 right now, newborns.  We do certain things depending on our age levels to gain experience.  With enough experience, we gain a level of course.  But when we gain that level, we also become a year older.”
“So you’re saying if we get a level up...we grow older automatically?”
“Yep.  That’s the only way we can grow up, so that way you can make the experience of the game as long or as brief as you want.  But they won’t let us run free until we’re level 10.”
“Cool!  I think I’m going to like this!”
Boltro looked down at the blanket where his area would be, feeling the bulky object around it again.
“But...if we’re babies...does that mean I’m wearing a-?”
“Diaper, yes.”
“I thought so.  Man, this game is so realistic.  I can see, feel, and hear everything that’s going on.”
“It’s virtual reality, after all.  That vortex put you inside the game, in mind and body.  You’re exactly how you are in the real world.  That way, you can tell who everyone really is.  You look nice enough, but then again I can’t really tell until we grow up.”
“Well I could say the same about you.”
Evo looked up at the ceiling and responded.
“I know.  You have every right to think that.  But no one can fake who they are in this game.  You’re exactly the way you are in real life.”
“Well that’s good.  So...you’re a fox anthro?”
“Kitsune actually.” Evo looked back at him and replied. “But you can’t really tell at my age, cause I only have one tail.”
“Cool!  I’ve never met a kitsune before!”
“It’s not really THAT special...but then again we are kinda rare.  So, what about you?  You’re a red wolf?”
“Mm Hmm.” Boltro nodded proudly.
“That’s pretty cool.  Your kind is rare nowadays too.”
“Yeah, I guess.  So, what are we supposed to do until our parents get here?”
“Don’t know.  We can’t get up and walk around yet.  Might as well just lay here and wait for them.”
Boltro and Evo looked back up at the ceiling, having nothing else to do.  All of a sudden, Boltro then got a strange feeling around his area.  He looked down where his area would be on the blanket.
“Hey...Evo...is it possible to wet your diaper in this game?”
“Umm...”
Evo looked down at his own area, probably getting the same feeling himself.
“...Yeah.  Yeah, I think you can.”
Boltro’s eyes became watery, then he started crying loudly.  While Boltro was crying, Evo kept looking down at his area.
“That’s odd.  I didn’t notice that the last time.”
An adult female wolf anthro then came up to them from across the room.
“Oh no.  What’s wrong, baby Boltro?”
She unwrapped the red pup and picked him up.  Her fur was so warm and calming that Boltro stopped crying.  She then put her hand on the bottom of his diaper.
“Oh, I see what the problem is.”
She unwrapped Evo, picked him up, and did the same thing.
“Oh, little Evo needs a change too.  Don’t worry you two, I’ll clean you up.”
She carried one of them in each hand, returning to the doorway she came from.

She walked through and down the hallway, then turned into a room fitting for the two boy’s ages.  It had a large crib big enough for two and a changing table.  She placed the two newborns on the table and began to untape Evo’s diaper first.  While she did so, Evo looked at his virtual brother.
“I’d take advantage of this while you can.” He told Boltro. “It’s not gonna last that long, plus things will get a lot harder as we get older.”
The mother powdered Evo and taped a new diaper on him, then she began the same process on Boltro.  While she was doing this, Boltro replied.
“This is just...a little too real to me.  I can feel the wet diaper on me and everything.”
“Like I said, you’re in this game in mind and body.  You’re in here entirely, but if anything bad happens you’ll simply be shoved back out.”
“So, I have to wait till I die to leave?”
“No silly.” Evo giggled. “You can just use your module.”
“My...module?”
“Look at your right arm.”
Boltro looked away from his brother and brought his arm to his eye level.  Attached to his arm was a sleek metal wrist band.  On the long wrist band was a screen that had green letters and numbers, showing all the stats you need to know in a RPG:
Player 555225 – Boltro
AGE LV – 0 / Newborn
HP – 10 / 10
MP – 0 / 0

There were also buttons.  He pressed one and the screen changed to showing more of his stats:
STRENGTH – 1
DEFENSE – 1
MAGIC – 0
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
WEAPON – None
ARMOR – None
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
XP – 0
NXT LV – 10

He pressed the same button another time and the screen switched again, this time to a menu.
OPTIONS
SAVE
QUIT

“Use that module to quit.” Evo told him. “And it can also show you your level and stuff, as you’ve probably seen.”
“Yeah, cool!  So I can just press ‘quit’ whenever I want?”
“Yep.  Then you’ll return to the real world.  And when you want to play again, simply go back through the vortex and you’ll be exactly where you left off.”
“Awesome!  Yeah, I’m definitely going to love this!”
“I’m glad you think so.” Evo smiled, but then he looked away and his voice grew a sad tone. “Maybe this time I can play all the way through...and then restart with the same brother...”
“Huh?  What’s that supposed to mean?”
Evo looked at his brother again.
“The last time I played...the first time...I had a different brother.  I...don’t really know what happened to him.  He just quit.”
“How sad...”
“Oh well, no big deal.” Evo smiled. “At least it meant I met you.”
Boltro giggled at the remark as his mother taped a clean diaper on him.
“There you go.” She said. “Now my babies are nice and clean.”
She picked them up, holding one in each arm like before, and softly placed them in the crib.
“There.  Time to sleep, my little bundles of joy.”
She kissed both of them on the forehead, then left the room and closed the door behind her.  Boltro then turned to his brother.
“As fun as this is, I’d better quit now.  My mom’s probably freaking out and wondering where I am.”
“Oh, yeah I completely understand.  I guess I’ll quit too.”
“Really?  You don’t have too just because I do...do you?”
“I don’t have to...but I want to.  I finished the game before; I’m not in a hurry to do it again.  I’ll only play when you do, so that way we stay at equal ages and neither of us gets ahead of the other.”
“Oh, good idea!  Okay, bye Evo!”
“See ‘ya around, Boltro.”
Boltro pressed ‘quit’ on the menu, and then everything turned completely green.

Luna came downstairs, looking for Boltro.
“Boltro, dinner’s ready and...Boltro?”
She looked all around the basement, but he wasn’t there.
“Boltro!?  Where are you!?”
She began to panic, but then she noticed the metal door on the wall.  She came closer to it and read the engraved word on the green orb.
“It says...‘LifeSpan’?  This is the game Boltro got?”
The door then opened and revealed the vortex, causing Luna to back away.  The vortex swirled faster and faster, until Boltro came flying out of it and slid across the floor.  When he stopped, he sat up and looked at himself.
“I-...I’m 16 again!  I’m back in the real world!”
“Boltro!?”
Luna came up to him and helped him to his feet.
“Boltro, where were you!?  I was worried sick!”
“I was in the game, Mom!  Oh man, it was awesome!  It was a lot like the real world, except I was a baby!”
“A baby?  Oh, nevermind.  As long as you’re safe.”
“I’m fine, Mom.  No need to worry.”
“Okay, well...dinner’s ready.  Come eat before your food gets cold, and then you can ‘play’ some more if you want.”
“Okay.”
Luna went back upstairs, but Boltro looked back at the door.
“I’d better figure out how to close this thing.  Don’t want anyone...or anything...going in on accident.”
He noticed a set of buttons on the right side of the door.  He went to them and noticed a red button that was a little bigger than the others.  He thought for a second, wondering what would happen if it was the wrong button.  But after he shrugged and pressed it anyway.  To his delight, the door closed and nothing else happened.
“Well, that’s that.  I’ll play some more tomorrow.”
He then turned away and ran upstairs, finding he was pretty hungry after such an ordeal.
