Description
"Disconnect" (2011) is an animated film I created/directed, exploring themes of depression and loneliness. The protagonist - Malcolm - struggles with his inability to connect with the world and the people around him.This was my graduation film for Emily Carr and took about 8 months to complete. To date it's the largest project I've worked on. I feel I could have done better, but I'm still very proud I what I managed to accomplish.
Special Thanks to my family and friends for putting up with me during the process.

I enjoy seeing artists and animators talking about social issues, and I think you've made a strong statement with this piece...
Although I think to really have an impact you would have to explore these issues a bit deeper, I find myself asking a lot of questions about the narrative itself. Taken as an emotional work, its quite powerful, and makes me wonder what you have experienced that inspired you to make it.

The film was meant as an expression of my past experiences, feelings, etc... So really researching into the subject of depression wasn't my main goal. But I hoped that through watching it viewers would be able to relate to Malcolm in some way and reflect on their own lives.
I do agree that the film could have had more impact. There are a lot scenes I look back on in the film that I wish I could have taken further had I had the time and energy to do so. There was one version I created before I started working on the final film, that I probably should have stuck with because I felt it had more impact. But it was also more challenging to figure out how to show it to an audience.

So.. u are in Graphics, that the graduation project... I am in prep. arts, and I hope I could enter graphics too... things aren't going easy cuz I am from Egypt and things aren't going easy at all, I really like the clip, the moves are beautiful...

I felt so relieved when the color emerged at the end. It's strange that doing something like smiling can change completely one's view of his surroundings. Great idea and animation.

I totally understand Malcolm's issues; I too have felt disconnected from the world in the past and I thought that you presented this feeling in a very 'real' human way.

I wish I read the film's description first but now I understand. Depression is a serious condition that is harmful to anybody's health. Your protagonist name Malcolm seems to be having a hard time to enjoy anything. I think the reason why you decided not to have faces on anybody is to make your audience try to understand his loneliness and because of his depression it's really hard for him to concentrate of his surroundings. The type of colors I most likely see in the film is dark coloring with shades of grey which sets the mood really well. The song plays out well also because it is calm and each note matches each part of the scenes.

That was... :\ very conveying. I felt like, every second of that. That boy's eyes were cute.
You know, what I see in this is somebody who wishes they had a life. 
Btw, I noticed how you dragged ppl in to see this, that was pretty amasing, must have taken you forever to figure out how to do this.
And also, somehow, when he started breathing hard, I started breathing hard. And I did'nt even notice it!!

It's almost as if this character is a ghost that wants to again mingle with the living and how he misses his old life oh there are so many things to say about this great job truly worth of a DD!

This is stupendously beautiful. You must have put a lot of effort into it, but everything flows so seamlessly you get this strange feeling of ease just watching it, like it just flowed from your fingers. I also love the simplicity with which you exhibited the theme of the piece, which makes it all the more beautiful and poignant because nothing is said in words but it's all just sort of there. Also, when he was kind of testing out his smile in the window...I wibbled a little, it was so touching. In any case you did such an incredible job, more people should watch this.
