Description This is one of several Kanohi masks whose shapes were originally made in official Bionicle art but their powers were unestablished. Swert of biosector01 and I came up with powers to use those shapes for the Aethion Expanded Multiverse, and Greg Farshtey canonized them as the powers for those mask shapes. Note that my art shown here is not canon. Many of these masks were only partially shown or were otherwise unclear; the sketch is meant to theorize what the rest of the mask looks like, and also to portray the EM version.

Official power, as defined on biosector01: "The Mask of Undeath is a Kanohi that siphons off a fraction of its user's life energy from their body, which it infuses the body with after death. The body is then animated by the lifeforce, and attempts to fulfill the last objective the user had while living. The mask gives the user no other special power and will slow down their processing, making it harder for them to fight. While undead, the user will lose all illumination in their eyes, making them empty and black. Toa would consider this mask power immoral."

And in the trivia section: "The Matoran shown wearing a Mask of Undeath is not actually undead; instead, his mask has black glass-like eyepieces to mimic the appearance of undeath, since Matoran cannot use Kanohi powers." That's in reference to the original official image of a Matoran in the realm of Karzahni; likely the mask with its eyepieces was assigned by the tyrant of that realm to remind the wearer of the horror of life there in yet another way. Bio from the 100-page Aethion guide PDF: "A rare mask most beings see as bad luck and taboo to wear. This mask cannot activate unless it is worn by a person when they die. After death, the mask animates the body to keep doing what the user would have wanted, for several years or so. While alive, for every moment it is worn, it charges up energy from the user's mental energy, making their mind slightly sluggish. How long the undead body continues on after death depends on how much time was spent wearing the mask in life. When undead, the user appears normal except their eyes and heartlights are black.

The only place this mask is commonly prized is Warzone. There are many undead warriors among various clans. Most who are living do not wear it as their primary mask, but spend time wearing it while not in battle, keeping both it and their normal mask handy and only switching to Undeath if they fear they are about to die."

Image inspired by the eerie and deadly nature of the land of Karzahni; even the survivors there probably feel as if they were undead as the ruler uses every means he can think of to rob life of its enjoyment or anything but misery. Most would likely become psychologicallky deadened after a time.

Note that while canonically Toa see it as immoral, and thus it's one of several powers preferred by servants of the Brotherhood of Makuta or the like, some Toa may believe their destinies are important enough to use the mask as extra insurance, so that even good goals can be pursued even for a while after death. Either in canon, the EM, or in other fanfiction (I have used it in my Paracosmos series once), this would be possible for Toa anywhere (not just EM's Warzone planet for example), though very rare. Seeing this mask on somebody's face would be a clear sign to everybody that the person is highly intent on a goal, even obsessive. Note that canonically, Toa who have strong morals apparently do not have such a strong aversion to the powers considered immoral that they would never wear them; Matoro was given an immoral mask by the Ignika as a Toa Mahri, and although it disturbed him, he did not worry about getting it replaced, because of the urgency of the situation.
