I used a 300mm lens. Didn't have to get that close, though they were very calmer than usual that day.

I use a Canon 20D and used a Canon 75-300mm IS lens for this shot.

Love the shot - such vibrant color - oh MY! The image is perfectly sharp - you gotta love that!!! And sooooo many butterflies on one flower - OMG!
Nit picky portion of the comment - love the central flower, the second gracing the upper right edge - not so much. Looks to me like editing this flower out would be "over the top" hard and it's too late to suggest retaking the picture with either a different angle or a wider angle....just a bit of composition nonsense....
