Description Calibrate your PC screens for great tone and colour with my tools. Just follow the instructions and by the end you should have a reasonably well calibrated monitor.

Preparation:
Set your monitor's colour temperature (white point) to 6500K, D65, or sRGB, which is equivalent to 6500K. Your display adaptor software should be set to 24 or 32 bit colour (True Colour).

1 - Open Brightness and contrast calibration.png

All strip shows a range of greys and blacks. You should be able to see a clear difference between each shade of grey, ranging from left to right. If not you have to calibrate your monitor.

Set your contrast up to 60 - 80%. If you can't see difference between squares on the 10% step strip after any adjustment you can bin your screen. It is useless for graphic design (or you can still use it for word processing but you know...). Colour and gradient images will help you to test new monitors in the shop.

Look at 5% steps strips. Adjust brightness so you can see difference on the right side (dark grey and black). Adjust contrast (if needed) to see difference on the left side (white and light greys).

Remember, there is 11 squares on each strip and you should see them (minimal differences on each end but still) all. All correct? Cool. You have fairly good quality screen.

Now check if you are able to see differences on 2% steps screens. Adjust contrast (if needed) to see difference on the left side (white and light greys). If it cuts out blacks or whites and you can't adjust it any more, well your screen is good but not great. If you manage to do it my congrats. Your have good quality screen.

2 - Open RGB gradients.png, Black and White gradients.png and LAB.png

All strips and squares should have smooth transitions between colours. Use saturation and gamma correction if needed but watch brightness and contrast strips to not destroy your previous calibration. If you see kind of a tiles not smooth colours your monitor doesn't display wide range of colours.

Looks OK? Good. Your screen has been calibrated.

Save this set of images on to your pendrive. You can use it while your trip to shop to pick up new screen.

REMEMBER DON'T BUY A SCREEN IF:

- You can't set the brightness and contrast correctly at least with 5% steps strips
- You can easily notice "tiles" on B/W gradients strips (low range of greys)
- You can easily notice "tiles" on RGB gradients strips (low range of colours)

PS - Last file is the calibration PSD. Feel free to use it if you want to build your own test images (size and layout). You can post this pictures everywhere on the net just credit me.

If you need more detailed explenation note me and I will tweak this tut to make it easier to follow.

I have a Dell vostro 3700 laptop and the screens standard settings shows all the tones in the contrast calibration. But whenever I am watching my art on another computer screen it shows really high contrast and dark areas. Even once I printed some of my pictures and the brightness and contrast was way out of the world. It had to be down toned about 100% in contrast to be able to show details that I drawed.
What is the problem here? Please help me.
Many thanks

Thx, I hope this set will be helpful. When you are about to buy new screen it is always better to check it, not to follow clerks advice.

Way cool, if I had more money I'd take mine up to a 22" widescreen, or ideally, 2...
