I'm making a series of these, examining each reason (there are quite a few) why ai generated images are not worthy of being called art and why the prompters are not worthy of being called artists. This is the third. The first two are here:

This one is specifically about the low level of control which a prompter has compared to the absolute control which a masterful artist has.

With ai, you can never make exactly what you have in mind and fully control the outcome. The machine you issue your prompts to will produce something which is within the parameters of what you've described but you will never describe every square millimetre in detail like a painter does (if you did, you might as well be painting and being an actual artist because you'd be making life just as hard for yourself and it would be just as time-consuming).

When I've looked at ai myself, I've found that it doesn't even manage to keep within the parameters 100% of the time. Sometimes it fails to understand or obey basic commands. If you ask it to try again using the same commands you previously issued, it will produce something different (by a little or a lot) to what it did before, so there is a strong element of randomness. This is one reason that even when the results turn out well, the prompter won't be able to take the credit for them.
