Same here, I just love lights and shape of the buildings. The silent movie Metropolis has always been an inspiration for my retro-futurism worlds. When I working on landscape and city drawings I love to use to an explosion of colors from Magenta to Embers, even if it is a day I just love bringing out a everything!!

.... WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?! I love Friz Lang's Metropolis! While it was very heavy handed with it's symbolism it did offer great visuals and a very interesting world that raises many questions like 'what is outside of the city?' 'Why did the city expand into the underground instead of building new districts for workers and factories on the surface?' You know, the questions that can not be explained in-universe. I love the skyline of 1940s New York, Chicago and Detroit and the era of Art Deco in general

haha I do not know!!  Have you seen the remastered extended edition, which shows off a bunch of details that was left out of the movie? Agreed it might have been to complex of a story to tell in as a Silent Movie. Yeah its world is interesting, though I think at that time and like most old sci fi, many people did not foresee that technology would shift from hardware to software. not to mention the urban planing was not real well thought out, I would imagine power shortages would have been a thing. I think there was a French sci fi book or movie that takes place in a megacity type world but it mentions all of problems of the tall buildings.

But I like to think Metropolis's could have ran on Fallouts logic, where like the computers run on magnetized tape but somehow has more processing power than today's computers. If you love Art Deco have you heard of Hugh Ferriss? you might love his designs of buildings.

Also another really cool cityscape is Buenos Aires, it variety of buildings is amazing!

Of course they didn't see the shift from gears to microchips etc. but I think that Chaplin's Modern Times dealt with the  same theme but with much more appeal for a wider audience and became more popular as a result (not to mention the terrible crippling of the movie after it's innitial release here in Germany which portraid the movie in a completely different way.)

Hugh Ferriss? His work is excellent. I like the otherworldlyness of his pieces and I like to imagine a world where most of his concepts became reality.

By the way, yes I have seen the extended cut and 'Voyage to Metropolis', the documentary

Yep, then again I love the story of ideas so ahead of it time that are spot on. I can see how Modern Times faired better, as the comedy might had something to do with it. Metropolis may have been left behind from the popular mind, however the internet and with time it is getting up there in memory. Heck Moby Dick was written in the early 1850s and was out of print, it was not until the 1900s that it became popular (not really a good example, but still). Though wish I knew more about the World cinema, as I find films from around the world amazing. If it was not for Youtube, I would have never discovered Soviet Era Animation, which is just breathtaking on its own.

Yep Hugh Ferriss is just awesome, I have a few books on his illustrations. I really did the who futurism thing, that wanted to based a world in it though, again I must admit the Fallout Wiki and Fallout timeline Bible was also a factor in my inspiration for creating my worlds. combined with one of favorite eras which is the royal charters and monopolies companies of the 1600s-1800s. The best way to sum it up, is that it was like a dystopian megacorporation world that happened.

In some concept art for Fallout Van Buran I can recognise some of your worlds and diesel punk is one of my favourite things as well, though I don't have much experience with soviet animation

I can see that, I have seen some of the Van Buran on the Fallout Wiki and It is interesting to see the unfinished project. with the F3 that came to be its concept landscapes are still some of my favorite pieces of art.

I think with Soviet Animation is kind of a Rabbit hole, that even The Simpsons made a parody of it.

I have just watched the second link that you sent me and I agree it is a very interesting piece of animation with a unique artstyle and unconventional storytelling (at least for us in the west). I like it very much. And I agree with you on your opinion on the concept art. Will you buy 'the art of Fallout 4'?

What is national backround?

Glad you like it! I know that most of them on youtube have a running time of like 9min, and most do not have subtitles still you can tell what is happening (most of the time). Which reminds me have seen the "Old man and the Sea" its from 1999, its animation was done with paint on glass.
I am thinking of buying the Art Book, but I might wait till after the game comes out. Though I do love looking at the "Making of" Books, I think Bioshock Infinite is one of my favorites.

National Backround? Are you talking about like Background checks or like nationality?

Interesting. By the way, do you take offence at some of the cliché depictions of native americans in something like Disney's Peter Pan? And as you probably could already guess, I come from germany and am,well caucasian

BoxofLizards In reply to SergeantPanther [2015-11-08 22:21:26 +0000 UTC]

To be honest not really, though the best why to look at old films is that they were a product of that time. With current media it can be annoying (Avatar), as most think there are one type of Indian. Which often times they are thinking of the Sioux which are known for their role in the Indian wars. And the Apache are seen as closing of the West Etc, but it is not the worse.

Though it depends on the location too in most parts many see Native Americans as drunks which is somewhat of a sad reality. Also there is the Per Capita Money which is a Check from the Treasury which is money from mineral rights etc off Native Land, though like most things it is very shady and poorly managed by the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs), Tribal Government, Chair man (Leads the Tribal Government), and other Divisions of the Government. Heck there is a story about parts of the Grand Canyon which is Tribal Land behind used to mine Uranium, which strangely there is a mention of it in the Fallout Bible though it talks about the whole Grand Canyon.

Haha sorry for the Diversion, anywho the cliche of mystics and image of Natives is often found funny by many Native Americans. There is funny line in a movie called "Smoke Signals" in which the main characters (who are native american) talk about Indians watching Indians on tv. Meaning why are they always watching western movies. Which is a thing, I do not live on a Reservation, but when I used to visit with my dad and sisters, our Grandma always had the Western Channel on. Now it is Police crime shows.

But also being me I do try to bring Native Americans into my works though not as characters or any thing like because it is kind of Cliche , but I do bring up a lot of the issues that often concerns me such as bad Government Administration by sub divisions like the Land Trust and BIA and programs.

so no worries about offending. I have a question do you the same problems in Germany?
I recently feel in love with German history and a bit of dutch as they did start the first stock trading company in 1602. As I also find the Merchant cities so fascinating like the Hanseatic League. then the German Unification of 1871 is so interesting etc among other things. Then again I must mention I love learning more about peoples and cultures because I am so sick of stereotypes.

I am too, I think that the steriotype of germans being beer drinking, sausage eating and wearing 'Lederhosen' (I don't know why they call them that when the word 'leather' and 'trousers' both exist within the english language), shure, we germans love our pork and beer as well as ... you know, are very important to our culture and history but it is not so very intigrated into everyday life, god knows that we have arrived very well in the 21st century. One think that is a sad truth about germany is the steriotype of germans being obese. 50% of germans are acording to studies over the recommended weight for their respective ages and which comes from a variety of factors. Many people also see bavaria (that is a dumb translation for 'Bayern') as being typical for germany with the houses with red roofs etc. but it has a long history of being different from, let's say Berlin.

On another note, did you hear the stuff that the mormons say about native americans? According to them (I am looking for the right term).... Your people? Yeah lets go with that. Your people are supposed to be former israelites that god turned 'red' as a punishment for killing Jesus who went to america after his death.... I don't know what you belive (if you even belive) but that is a bunch of BS if I ever heard one. Racial garbage has always been a thing with them, and they also seem to admire blond haired caucasians.... I really want to make a nazi joke right now but the truth is that there is only one true master race. The glorious PC gaming master race
(If you ask what I belive though, I am beliving in Bethesdianity. In the name of the Newell, the Howard and the holy Pete Hines, bless you and may he bring you many Fallout 4 expansions and steam sales no but honestly, I ... well I would say that I am somewhere between a protestant and agnostic since I do go to church for the group but don't belive that a 600 year old man build a ship that carried every animal on earth)

And at last, I think that native american characters are very under represented in popular media, the only one I can think of that appeared in live action is that ripped bloke from Twilight, Jakob.

That is very strange indeed. I have not heard of the obese being a thing in Germany, though that it might be is because we hear it all the time in our own country. Than again we do love our cheep ass sponge hamburgers and apparently we love to clap all the time for some reason

It is interesting how a part of a country is seen to reflects the whole region. I know here in the Midwest, everyone thinks everyone talks as if they were in the movie "Fargo" so you darn tooting it can be annoying. but I do hear the world "Say" all the darn time. I am not from the Midwest just currently live here, I was born in Arizona and moved around from cliche American white suburb to suburb. My Step Mom whose parents are from Norway talks about the stereotypes among Scandinavians. Which is crazy not many people here in the US realize the racism among groups, I know like a lot of incidents in the 50s suburbs and neighborhoods was due to second/third generation of European immigrants chasing out people that they believed would devalue their homes and bring down the neighborhood among other things. Heck in the 90s there was a bunch of subtle redrawing of line that many now realized happened, while other always knew about it but no cared.

Yeah I have heard of thing about Mormons and Native Americans, so much that even South Park mentioned it.

I don't know Simcity, Diablo and other game ports seem to show the mold in the Uber Concrete (Wolfenstein New Order Joke). I on the other hand love my red headed step child of a console (Orange Box on Xbox360 joke).

I have love hate relationship with Bethesdianity, their buggy games seem to have an effect that would other wise sending me packing, but they just keep brining me back in for their gospel of the Atom.

Not to get all religious or anything as that is a flame the internet loves to burn but what the heck...
I am kind of Spiritual (kind of ironic that I just talked about Native Americans stereotypes of being Spiritualist :/), but not religious. Though I do like Buddhism and the idea of having inner happiness and peace and all that jazz.

I think it was the Pete Holmes Podcast in which he talks about all kinds of thing with other comedians and at the end they have a philosophical conversation about life and faith at the end. Anywho he mentions talking to a Rabi who said that no one should take the early bible stories too literal as they are just stories that are a metaphor or an Allegory.

Yeah they are... but oh well, At least Jakob was a better when compared to Johnny depp in the Long Ranger. yikes it was like Tropic Thunder that was not aware of its self.

Oh,jeez now I have to read all of this?

But I can say that saying 'say' around one can get pretty annoying, wouldn't you say so? I remember watching a sketch in "everybody hates Chris" were they showed a scene in a clichèd imagination of the 50s were a black person moved into one of the houses in his neighbourhood and everybody moved out hysterically
"Old man: And over there on the corner they used to sell crackers.
Chris: And now they sell crack there"

By the way, it's 'super concrete' ('Uber' is not even the correct port, it should be 'Ueber' since you don't have 'ü's and it is weird that you use that word to me, since it just simply means 'over')

I do agree with the Rabi, I have something that has shocked me about Christianity, three words: Answers.In.Genisis. It really is fucking dumb, there is a group out there who claims that the stories in the early testament are true and tries to support it by gathering specific scientific theories and basically says "screw the ones that you can not immediately observe", here is a video of a group of non-believers going to one of their "museums",it's funny to watch  m.youtube.com/watch?v=xVHWq0ZG…

I agree with you on Johnny Depp, though

BoxofLizards In reply to SergeantPanther [2015-11-10 01:18:10 +0000 UTC]

Say What!

Haha I know I was lazy to add "Ü". Then again in Wolfenstein the New Order they actually call it Über Concrete which is strange as I knew it means "Over". Only reason I know that is it from Team Fortress 2, I was hoping you would catch that.

Yeah I know what you mean about the "Answers in Genesis" Here in the Midwest you see religious billboards along the highway that say that kind of thing, I kid you not it is everywhere (More so in Iowa). Do have a that kind of problem in Germany? I have heard of the museums, its in the news all the time, and I listen to public radio and its still annoying. Heck there is big thing about flu shots over here for some reason to the point its in the mock of a debate that is our presidential debates.

I hope Fallout 4 is the amazing thing of beauty that man created! I get my Xbone and game tomorrow

We don't have this problem here in Germany, the people I have came in contact with who believe in anything are usually not that close minded, but what do I know, America is notorious for being full of nutters, thanks for the A-bomb though

P.S. On my PC Fallout 4 looks kinda crappy...

Sure thing! Remember we have to make sure their is not a mine shaft gap. Also yeah we did give the gift that keeps on giving for we love changing the hopes and the wings that take dreams

Are you sure it is not just a Bethesda game? They never make the most polished games as seen in New Vegas. Yet it was good enough over the crashes to be one of the best games last generation.

Yeah sorry that was too abstract of a joke. Since you ref the Atomic bomb as our gift, and with Fallout well out. I thought some nuclear humor was in order. So I was referring the Movie Dr. Strangelove when the soviet doomsday will wipe out all life on earth, the characters talk about out mining the Soviets in number of mines which is a ref to the missile gap. And since we are MAD mutually assured destruction. Haha also since you said the US has a bunch of nutters I thought it would be funny to say that we are so mad that we had a president (Bush) that said crazy shit all the time. So I ref to a speach he made about the future in which he said wings takes dreams.
