THE DATE was September 11, 2023, the show WEW Global Monday. Athena Vain entered the ring, as always, both her strong shoulders draped in gold. The 25-year old powerhouse got handed a mic and smiled at the fans, as she raised it to her mouth. She glanced at her two title belts and her pleased smile widened.
"Don't these babies look great on me?", she opened.
The fans cheered. Athena continued.
"It's been a full calendar year and counting now that I defeated the mighty Freya Phoenix and unified these two gorgeous belts into one precious and prestigious Women's Undisputed Championship! Since then I have wrestled many greats! Legends even! Samera, the Samoan destroyer! The cagey veteran Vera Nash! The iconic Roxy! The one-woman wrecking crew from the orient, Írem the Machine! The legend, the megastar herself, Karen Storms! The pint-sized war goddess that is Demolisher! And but recently ... the technical marvel Jen Orton!"
She paused and allowed the fans to cheer each of the name-dropped stars, giving them the deserving applause. Only then, she continued.
"I have nothing but respect for each and every one of them! They are all great in their own way ... buuuuuuuuuuuut I not only wrestled and hung with, I beat them all!"
For that, she got appropriately cheered. She was a juggernaut! A dominant, undefeated champion, but the fans still couldn't get enough of her. Her momentum was still not slowing down. She gave an apologetic smile and shrugged.
"But now ... we have a problem! You see, I defended the Undisputed Title month in, month out for over a year now! Still champion! Still undefeated! And slowly, but surely, the question no longer is who's next? It's who's left?"
She looked at her title belts, shinging them up with her free hand, before she continued.
"You see, I have been unbeaten long before I became champion! I have beaten women! I have beaten men! Chewing up the entire WEW roster, I have mustered a quite impressive record, if I dare say so myself, of 99-0!"
The fans cheered, but Athena got serious.
"Now the next PPV is upon us, WEW Clash of Brands! It's gonna be a doozy! And I not only wanna defend my title, but also bag my 100th victory! A milestone like that cannot - and shall not - be against just some rando! No! I need a proper challenger! Heck, I need the challenger of all challengers! I want my 100th match in WEW to be unforgettable! A true fight! One I either win or go down trying!"
The fans once again cheered, while she glared into the camera, filled to the brim with electric intensity.
"So ...!", she finally continued, "I demand WEW management look far and wide and bring me SOMEONE who can actually hang with ME! Someone worth my time!"
She looked at the camera again, with a smug smile this time.
"If someone like this exists!"
The fans cheered once more and Athena set about leaving the ring ... when the lights flickered. She paused, as static appeared on the big screen, followed by white noise. She had just turned to a stagehand, asking what was going on, when the screen went black. The fans immediately realized this weren't technical difficulties, but that something was about to happen. The arena fell into tense silence. Then, the lights on the stage turned red and a creepy music box started playing. Only for a few seconds, then ... silence again.
And then sirens blared and hardrock music hit! What followed was the iconic voice of Mr. Lordi, singing:
"Take a step back"
"Don't look her straight in the eye"
"Beware what you're saying"
And the crowd went wild! The following pop drowned out the next part of the song. But then, as a dark figure emerged, the fans started singing along, chanting the lyrics in part at Athena.
"She wears Man Skin Boots!"
"And she's not gonna please ya!"
"No, she's not gonna tease ya!"
"She's the queen bee, baby!"
"Man Skin Boots"
"You're a bug to a spider!"
"She's a shark, you're a slider!"
"She's the beastess lady!"
And accompanied by this deafening sing-along, one of, if not THEE biggest name in women's wrestling today marched to the ring. About to set foot in a WEW ring for the first time in history.
Even a powerhouse champion like Athena Vain had to feel queasy here.
