Description I found this off of a rural road, abondoned and with several cardboard beer boxes not too far away from it. I assume it was a local 'party' area.

I find it interesting the things that people leave behind. Memories. People. Places. Houses, even. It makes me wonder how easy it is to leave behind things that were at one time so very important to us. Things get misplaced, taken, lost, or simply gotten rid of.

Anyway, comments and critiques are welcomed.

You know it's wierd. I never sit and read all the comments on a photo... But I did with this one...

The picture reminds me of a game, Stalker - Shadow of chernobyl. It has the same derelict grainy feel. I love it

Have to say I am impressed with the colour and finish of this shot. I just posted [link] and went the other way as you can see. I have a hankering to produce soft and moody shots and will try and emulate yours and others in the future.. want to give away any secrets ( i general terms?)

Experiment. Non-stop. I love to try new things, re-invent old, re-do what others have done a hundred times before because I want the experience of doing it as well.

Challenge yourself. Find new ways to use your camera, film, photoshop even. Try new angles. Shoot a whole roll of film on what subject. Walk around your town/city and take 3-6 rolls of film on the way. These are practices I try to do, though even I slack at times.

Don't be afraid to look like an idiot. I've had this issue before, and on occassion... where I see a really great shot, but it would require me pulling over in my car and getting out and on occassion laying on the ground to get the right shot.

I recommend playing with every aspect of your camera -- different lenses, filters, films, different lighting situations, changing aperature and shutter speeds, etc. Once I have a bit more cash, I will be attempting some filtered shots.

I also highly recommend critiques -- both giving and receiving them can help you to develop and grow as an artist. Critique is my favorite part of the art classes I take. It makes you see your work through someone elses eyes on occassion, which is a great experience -- one of the reasons I love dA so much.

I quite agree.. my experiments need to be within the software as I take plenty of shots and look like a dork often! I can duotone and Tri tone but I have yet to find the secret of soft pastel painting like shots.
Just one last question... whats a roll of film? heheh!

I suppose I'm of the dying and die-hard generation of film users.

Whoa. I think that was my old trailor... No, seriously. That was a party place too. But I can't be sure because I was like 5 then and I was always drinking left over beer so I was always rather drunk.

Okay, enough joking. I did like this shot a lot, even more so because of your comment about it. I love seeing old trucks and shacks just off the road in a wooded area. When I was a kid we lived in area that had a load of those sorts of things and I always would make up stories about the people who had lived in them and such. Well, I did this as we drove by. I would never have gone a hundred yards near one by myself.

Yeah, I love seeing old abandoned things like this, too. But it always makes me a little bit sad. Just wondering about the people who owned it and such.

I don't know why, but I wasn't afraid to be there by myself. I'd be more worried about an animal living there than people trying to bug me.

Good shot, you should have hunted down the "get -ya-some" spot (ref: party spot) for some abstracts...

Yeah, I would have poked around longer, but some neighbors kept driving by and eyeing me, so I just left.

Yes people often leave behind things that where once a big part of their lives it makes us what we are.

I like the colors and how they look antiqued. This picture is so old looking, and it makes me wonder about the people who lived there.

rabidwire [2005-08-14 04:07:26 +0000 UTC]

I would have desaturated it, or zoomed out a bit more. To me it says more "this is a trailer. See how sad it is?" than "this is art. See how visually interesting it is?". It smells of snapshot more than the rest of your work has, but I can see where you were going.

breaking-reality In reply to rabidwire [2005-08-14 04:10:05 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I did desaturate it.

Also, I wanted the shot to be closer up. Further away spoke more of 'snapshot' to me than this.

This is beautiful. I love shots like this, there are a lot of old abandoned farms and such near where I live... they're something so sad about them. Great shot.

I agree, there is something so sad about them. It always gets me curious about who lived there and the life that led up to their leaving.
