Description
This is a colored version of this drawing (<brensey.deviantart.com/art/Murβ¦Unlike my Don Octavio color test (<brensey.deviantart.com/art/Donβ¦ I didn't trace my original drawing before coloring. Instead, I just colored around the original ink work that I did by hand on the paper.
I'm not sure which method I prefer. Tracing the linework makes it WAY easier to insert backgrounds (plus, the lines are cleaner and pop out more when they're digital). But hand inking looks better/smoother than my attempts to trace over my stuff on the tablet. So I guess the methods are pretty much equal at this point.

Ways I've used for making lineart smoother is working at a higher DPI/PPI (usually 300) and a thicker hard brush (about 9). By doing this you can shrink the image down once your done and it smooths out the lines. That's what I used to do at least, in Photoshop. Now I'm working pretty much entirely in Manga StudioEX and the Pen Tool in that program is Amaaazziiiing

Thanks for the tip! It's actually helped on future tablet attempts!

One suggest I have is cleaning up the linework as much as possible, then heading to curves in photoshop to darken the original lines before coloring it. I usually do that if I end up coloring something in photoshop. Since haha- man I am not fond of tracing my lines over again.Β

What's the "curves" feature? I'm still learning how to use photoshop and I haven't discovered it yet

Curves is (far as I know currently) for playing with the color contrast/brightness of an image. For a B&W image it's great for darkening your lines enough for them to still pop out a bit more.
Curves is under Image > Adjustments > CurvesΒ
Pretty much the whole adjustment section is meant to tweak colors in some way.Β

The curves feature is neat! Thanks for telling me about it (I don't think I would have found it on my own)! ^_^;

fft, no problem! I tend to sort of over use the feature, so I must spread the knowledge of it to aallll. (I know that feeling, I still don't know everything about photoshop to this day.)

That's one of the reasons I've taken to sketching and completing drawings purely on the tablet. It just looks better overall...although I recommend tracing over existing drawings just for the practice.

I've been practicing doodling with the tablet. But it still feels like trying to draw with my left hand (and the finished drawings look like that, too). And even tracing my existing lines results in them losing a lot of nuance and detail.

It takes a lot of practice, and even then you can never beat drawing with pencil/pen and paper. It's just a lot easier to have a digital doodle when you do it start to finish. (I had to live without a scanner when I first got my tablet. I struggled, but I have been getting gradually better.)
