Description

Some concept art for my webcomic Marble Gate Dungeon for some point in a future chapter. It was originally a Patreon reward back in August, but enough time has passed so I'm releasing it to the public.

Lore:
The Keshtar Chain is a long series of tropical islands in the middle of the Eagle Sea. Warm Fey winds from the south bring in salty water from the ocean, as well as the many inhabitants that live in it.
Mermaids are one such inhabitants. They are a rare and beautiful race of sea Fey. Unlike the far more common fishfolk and takospawn, mermaids are an all-female race that have deep ties to Fey magic. They are elusive and almost never seen by surface dwellers, but of course, many sailors have spoken tall-tales of encounters with such beautiful and deceptive beings.
Among the ocean-dwelling races, mermaids are known to have a special connection with sea creatures and plants, and are even sometimes found to be priestesses of Syrenida; a pure-blooded immortal Fey, and goddess of the Eagle Sea.
Where they come from is a mystery, but the cause of their existence is likely the same as other lesser Fey; the strange conception between an ancient Fey pure-blood and one or more mortal creatures or beasts that captured its interest. Due to the sexually parasitical nature of Fey pure-bloods, they and their descendants are often associated in myth and story with both promiscuity, and interracial love. Being of Fey blood themselves, legends (of varying credibility) speak of mermaids growing "attachments" to other races and creatures. However, far more evidence suggests that they are dangerous, lying creatures that are not to be trusted if encountered.
Curiously, mermaids have even been seen within the Marble Gate Dungeon. The only other Fey creatures that have been found to live within Marble Gate are ones that placed themselves inside willingly for one reason or another, and almost always have a means of teleporting out.
