Description
The Imperial Guard relief force marched through the city gates with crowds of the native inhabitants looking on. But there was little cheering or celebrating. The grim-looking army was not the angels of salvation that the people had thought they would be. Rather, they were silent, lifeless beings that spared the people not even a single glance as they marched by. The peoples faces grew nearly as dreary as the soldiers masks as they realized that their saviors were not like angels, but more like walking corpses.
But through the crowd of bleak and cheerless faces, a bright and sunny one appeared.
'Why is everyone so afraid of them,' she thought, 'when they're here to save us? We should be thankful.'
She leaned over the side and reached out to the nearest passing soldier, holding one of the summer flowers she had gathered.
'These are for someone else, but you can have one.' she said cheerfully.
The soldier hesitated for a moment, looking at the gift being presented to him, then he moved back into formation. He didn't take it, but she was sure that he wanted to.
Her grandmother frantically pulled her back and began scolding her. She didn't listen, she just put the flower back with the rest and stepped back, her smile unchanged.

When I first saw this awesome art of yours before reading the description, I have this damn feeling that it is a very VERY bad idea giving flowers to soldiers who are nothing but "walking corpses."
A superior officer, or a commissar, nearby would have shot her...

Dude, the Commissar are there to REIGN IN these guys. They're so ready to die for their duty that the Commissars have to make them undergo less suicidal plans! They're probably the last people there who would shoot her.

Because she is a naive young girl who, unlike the citizens, wasn't frightened or intimidated by the guardsman from theΒ Death Korps of Krieg. Instead, she isΒ naive/stupid/idealistic/sweet/sheltered enough to see them not as faceless cannon fodder who were basicly dead inside, but as heroic saviors sent to protect them.
It shows that even in a universe as messed up and violent as Warhammer 40K, there is still alway a place for a bit of humanity and common kindness. Β Β Β

You just don't see scenes like this in 40K art enough. I love how shocked the old woman looks, and how the Guardsman's head is the only thing that's out of formation. And the way that the girl and her flowers are the only thing with real color in the scene is a great touch too.
Damn fine work! I'd love to see more of this.

That Death Korps Grenadier will probably return for that Flower or the girl. And he most certainly will do the best he can do in the upcoming battles for that world. And since most Imperial Guardians retire after 10 years of service, he may go back and muster up some courage to try to become her friend and try to go further once he finds out about Social life. And yes, Imperial Guardians do retire after around 10 years of service, though it may and probably will be longer for Death Korps. I just hope that he did get to go back.

Not true. After ten years of service (since a founding or re-founding), a regiment gains the right to claim a world they conquer or save as their own to settle or rule. Even then, there are conditions. The decision has to be supported by higher ups, and a single regiment has to be able to claim the victory as being solely theirs. The individual Guardsmen (not Guardians) serve until they're no longer able to serve, or special conditions allow them to retire. Some regiments have a set service period, but not the majority. It's a job for life. Also, as many Guard officers are career hungry, they might not accept the world, as a world that can be saved by a single regiment may not be important or rich enough to satisfy their ambitions... This is 40K... He's Krieg... The chances of him surviving, let alone reaching that girl, are astronomical...

But the men of Krieg want only one thing, to die in service of the Emperor to make up for their blasphemous past. Every waking moment is spent serving the Emperor. As they say, "Only in death does duty end."

CommissarAdrian In reply to Xenoman117 [2014-11-30 06:02:09 +0000 UTC]
Normally I would agree, but the men of Krieg are exceptions to that saying. Their training is considered harsh even by Imperium standards. Hell they have recruits fight each other to the death just to weed out the weak and unskilled. Not to mention that any young men of Krieg are constantly broken down mentally and rebuilt. Mental reconditioning is a key aspect of Krieg training. Anything that even suggests weakness or fear is not tolerated. The entire character of the Krieg revolves around war and death. They were created by it. They know nothing but constant combat from a young age and generations have been bought up with only one goal; Death in the name of the Emperor. That is what they are. That is what makes them the Death Korps of Krieg. To allude to anything else is equal to striping them of their very identity.
And I can't believe I missed this before, but your statement, "...most Imperial Guardians retire after 10 years of service." The Death Korps of Krieg are once again not like most Imperial Regiments. Retirement is not an option. They will shoot and kill any soldier that even thinks about a life outside of serving the Emperor on the battlefield. Say what you will but GW and Canon supports this.
On that note...the picture is still amazing and clearly shows the difference between the average civilian and the battle hardened soldiers of the Imperium.

I do have to say, you have a very good argument, but I have two basic yet understandable arguments.
1. They are still Humans. Humans are both vile robotic and sadistic warmongers, and kind-hearted peacemakers and messiahs. All depends on the person.
2. No one is exactly the same, and there are too many variables for the system of the DK-K to weed out and perfectly make every Krieger a true Krieger, AKA no Human Emotion can be 100% destroyed ever, as long as the subject is still Human in nature and genetics, cybernetic enhancement included, depending on it's type.
Also, this is a good drawing, indeed.

Although...that whole thing is moot if these guys aren't Krieg guardsmen but rather from the Armageddon Steel Legion. THEN the thought of the guardsman coming back after retiring is possible. And then in that case I can embrace your statement.
So are these guys Krieg or Steel Legion? Or are they just guardsmen with gas masks with skulls? You know I think I might have jumped the gun by proclaiming them to by Krieg right off the bat. Whoops?

There will be a fiction with a Kriegsman and that girl.
Do you know why?
One has already been made with an Emperor-damned VINDICARE ASSASSIN. It's almost the same level of mind-fuckery as the Death Korps, right?

Not a comic or tv series unfortunately
It's from an open-world game franchise called Warhammer 40,000. It's a series of tabletop games, video games, books, and other stuff. It's famous for its dark, cruel, hopeless and mean-spirited setting, so don't expect to see more things like this.

i can't pick a side as per what army i want, imperial guard, space marine , or orks
imperial guard are easier to connect to
space marines are almost too badass to pass up
and orks along with being absolutely hilarious, are the closest thing 40k has to an innocent race
