Description This is the first piece I've ever done almost entirely with a brush. I've used a brush pen before, but this time I did the majority of the piece (aside from the clouds and some of the water spray, and a bit in his face) with a beat up Winsor & Newton Series 7 no. 4 (I think that's what it is--it's faded). I think it turned out fairly well. If I would have had some zipatone on hand, I would have really gone to down on this piece. Maybe when I get some time (HA!), I'll do some digital toning on it. I love the idea of keeping it black and white to keep the old movie feel. I had thought about toning it with gray marker, but I think even that would add too much color.

I went with the brush this time to challenge myself and to produce some quick and organic variation for his rough texturing. I think it turned out fairly well, though I'm still MUCH more comfortable with a tech pen.

Done with HB pencil (actually and 4B just to get a really organic texture--BIG mistake--that stuff is terrible to erase), brush and Rapidograph ink, and a cheap white ink pen for highlights and spray.

As always, thanks for looking!

I can't use brush pens for serious work--my hand is just too heavy to get a thin line with one. Actual brushes on the other hand are so easy and very much fun to work with. I don't know why it took me so long to actually finally try them. Now all I have to do is get off my computer and use them more.

I've had some hand/nerve issues for a while, so I've traditionally tried to stay away from inking, particularly inking with a brush. But things have been working a LOT better this past year, so I tried to give it a shot. I was really surprised that it didn't turn out a mess, particularly since I didn't go from really tight pencils. So it took me a while to really try them out, too!

I think it's much harder to ink from tight pencils--if I am doing a brush ink piece, I try as hard as possible to keep my lines really loose. Those long thighs can be such a pain. French curves work awesome, but nothing beats confidence in a long brush stroke.

Thanks, Chris. I actually had a great time playing with a brush on this. I've totally stayed away from them in the past. bust this was fairly fun. Do you use a brush on your inking? You've always got such incredibly smooth line work. For me, at least at this stage, the brush gives more more organic lines, which worked with this piece.

90% of my inking is with a brush, the other 10% is crowquill or micron.

Hey, man. I totally meant it. I like your work a lot, and would definitely love to see what you've been working on, when you can post it. And I know what you're talking about when you mention the schedule. I actually had to skip this week's sketch challenge. But come back when you can. I'm always impressed with how you handle group shots (something I've got to work on).
