Description So, pretty much everybody's seen the latest My Little Pony incarnation, right?

Well, if you're a fan, you're probably rather painfully aware of how much the toys don't really look like the ponies they're supposed to represent?

Anyway. Rainbow Dash is my favorite character on the show. And she probably has the most inaccurate toy of the bunch. So, I decided to fix her. This is how Rainbow Dash SHOULD look. I customized her myself. She is re-haired with all her own original hair, except the red, which was too short for me to re-use. So I got some "Pomme d'Amour" Dollyhair, which was almost a perfect match to the original red, and used that instead. I also touched up the pinkish-maroon in her irises and reshaped the eyelash line to look more like Dash and less like Fluttershy, and tried to give her that "determined" look. I also had to touch up all the white on her, in her eyes and on her cutie mark. The decapitated Dash head there (which will belong to my ponysona) is there for comparison.

So, fillies and gentlecolts, I'd say this is at least 20% cooler, wouldn't you?

No, she isn't for sale. And I don't really have plans to mod and sell them because this took a lot of time and I have a real job and a life and other hobbies.

Lauren Faust is one of the few people that I would GIFT one of these girls to, though, for making such an awesome show. She's free to ask for one at any time.

sorry about the edits if you're seeing them all. It's been so long since I uploaded anything that I realize I keep forgetting stuff like the keywords and things...

ADDENDUM:
Okay, unfortunately, I have to reiterate this. While I appreciate that other fans like this mod,
No, I am not selling this toy, and
No, I do NOT do commissions for these, and I do not plan to.
There was only ever one exception, and that was at a different point in my life, so please do not ask.
Thanks.

I'd love to see a tutorial on how you fixed the hair. Was it just a re-style and cut, or did you have to completely uproot it and start from scratch?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

brewing-trouble In reply to Gavalanche [2011-04-02 16:55:27 +0000 UTC]

From scratch. I removed ALL the hair from the pony (sectioned and separated into respective color groups first, of course), and then rerooted it all, color by color.

A cut and restyle just won't produce the same result. The factory hair colors are simply not in the right places at all.

An excellent photo tutorial on pony modding can be gotten from CustomAnon, here on dA. That covers all the basics you'd need to know to start modding your own Dash. I can give Dash-specific pointers, but it'd be redundant for me to do a whole tutorial when CustomAnon did such a great job covering those points on their own.

that does look better. I actually the plastic molded hair one's in the giftset more than the others. The hair gives them distinct look more than anything. Also, they gave them actual individual faces.

But anyway, great job. The hair the hair was so lazily done in the original, made it look like it'd be impossible to do rainbow dash's hair correctly.
Question though, I know nothing about toy modding. Is the hair like stuck that way hairsprayed. Like if a kid actually played with it, would the rainbow colors stay separated like that?

dokittydoki In reply to lucidrobot [2011-04-03 10:40:30 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I totally agree. The hairstyles make each pony look like themselves. That's why the gift set is the only thing I've bought so far.

There isn't any hairspray on this pony at all; once all the hair is in, you can use your fingers, or twirl it around a stick (for curls) or otherwise push it into position and then use boiling-hot water to heat the hair, and then it sets when it cools or you can dunk it in ice water to set it faster. So I know the mane would definitely tend to stay separated unless the kid chewed on the hair or otherwise ruined it (and that's really a whole nother problem that would happen with ANY pony, no matter the hair color or length). Tails DO tend to get messed up (I had the original MLPs when they came out in the 80's!! yeah, I'm that old lol), but since the tail hair is flame-fused together in the proper order inside her rump, all she should need to put the colors back in order (or close to it) is just some gentle combing. That isn't possible with the way they put the factory tails in. So it may be that that's their sticking point... but it's not like it was hard to fuse the tail color sections, so I don't think that should have been a problem... hrm.

Of course, I don't have any kids, so I can't really test this theory. :/

*shrugs* Well, Lauren Faust apparently fav'd it... so... maybe they have seen it?

I really don't know what their reasons are for their "bucking up" the toys like they have, and I actually almost want to know what their reasoning was...

Someone else already did that for me. Look up CustomAnon here on dA, and they have a photo tutorial on how to mod one of these ponies.

Thanks. I highly encourage others to give modding a try. There's a sense of pride in saying "I did this myself!"

i hate so much that they don't do the toys right x.x i think it makes any my little pony fans cry x.x

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS my friend bought me rainbow dash and i was thinking of modifying mine too but i cant find any red hair to match so i dont thing i will x.x

but seriously..... how hard can it be for a toy company to make their own toys right? =/ why disappoint a ton of fans XD

Yeah, dude, I really don't know what Hasbro's problem is...

If you want to mod your own, go to Dollyhair.com, and order a skein of the Pomme d'Amour red MLP hair. That's the red that you need. It only costs about $4 shipped.

Or, heck, throw a buck or two my way and I'll send you enough of mine to do your Dash! I have plenty left over and I really doubt I'll be using it all.

Hasbro has never cared much for detail =/

im not sure if i'll even do anything to it yet =< i have to see if my friend would let me modify it. since he's giving it to me he might not like the idea of me doing that to it lol

brewing-trouble In reply to bluesnyder [2011-04-02 16:13:46 +0000 UTC]

A lot of people have been saying that.

If anyone from Hasbro ever comes across this page, I REALLY hope they're taking note of that!! A few minor changes and they could almost DOUBLE their sales... keeping them as they are is kind of a bad business decision!

I hope that won't be necessary.

If you're interested, I MIGHT be making another at some point in the future, to auction off. But I don't really have any solid plans yet, and I also have 5 other ponies to get to.

Just out of curiosity, how long did this take to do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

brewing-trouble In reply to BrandyHarringtonLove [2011-04-02 16:10:35 +0000 UTC]

Umm... well, that's hard to say because it took a while for the red hair to come in from the dolly hair supply place I ordered it from. But all told, a little over a week, in my spare time. If I had time to just sit down and do it from start to finish without interruption except for sleeping and eating, probably just a day or two.
