I can see inspiration from the episode pairings New Leaf, and Once Bitten. Your sketches are good, it almost looks like you were the story board artists for these.

How long does it take for you to do all these penciled roughs? Ever timed or filmed yourself drawing?

I timed myself once or twice just to challenge my flow. It's always good the just rough out forms and build up and up. I can do them quite fast!! Speed comes with hours and hours and years of practice, I say just love what you do at all times and speed and great lines will come naturally. It probably took me 25 minutes to do this page. I never filmed myself... I do see a lot of those on YouTube though... I don't have a camera..is there a way to do that all from the computer with free software, if so I'm game! I hope this helps..

Thanks for the reply. Just save up for a web cam, and maybe create a Youtube account. Eventually that is. Speaking of sketches and cartoon work. What do you think of mine? And. I think I've asked you this, but do you work for Nickelodeon or any other big named studios?

You really have the drive and the passion, it really shows in the variety of styles you have and the amount! I would like to see you work through your characters as if they were alive. Keep it loose like the doodle posts and just build up from that. Practice and build confidence in your lines and all the rest will shine through in time. There is a never ending learning process in art.. Take advantage of the resources and use them to your advantage.

I'm using SAI.Back then, I used to use Flash. And way before that Photoshop. But I like to use traditional pen inking.

In don't know the SAI... But all the same...must be confident with the line and overlap the lines then erase where needed... Zoom in! No need to break you back trying to kiss the monitor. Hahaha. Control Z will become your friend..if the first line doesn't work...try and try again! Depends on the style but thick to thin lines are always nice!

Yeah. I've tried that before. What about old school inking. With pens, brushes, etc?

Ohh... I have no clue hahha... I would use a permanent ink to reduce smear. And a brush tips to get thick and thin lines. I would practice on different papers to see what works best for you! I suck at that part... I Really can't help on traditional inking.... Photoshop and flash is a different question.

Do you prefer digital inking over that of traditional inking?

Yup! but I like the feel of hand sketching better than doing it digitally. There is something about pencil hitting papar and the line flow that feels better then a plastic tip running on a Wacom.

I know what you mean. the same goes with inking using a regular pen. Though the erasing can be a bit of a pain. Now, as for paper, do you prefer loose leaf, or bounded via either glue or ring bound in a book and/or pad format?

I like roughing on newsprint. It's dirt cheap, and works awesome. I also like mixed media 98lb paper 9x12... And right now I think I'm using 14x17 60lb paper. I like to use Faber Castell color pencils black or earth green. They have a little bit of oil in them so it doesn't smear like graphite or shine when put down heavy. They do take confidence cause they don't erase very well at all. I don't see the point in paying a butt load of money for a leather bound sketch books..Its just not for me. Canson makes the mixed media ring ones, that you can tear pages out of... 60 pages.. I have filled many of those... So those are my go to and they are under 10 bucks. Blick stores are great.. That's the only place I step foot in... Michaels blows, they are way over priced and their paper is usual messed up with bent corners and trashed. I will never recommend that place.

I've been to Michael's and they've sold some pretty good stuff. Also to Aaron Bros. I don't think there's a Blick's store in California. I'll have to look. I ask cause I find sketch books easier to use,and you won't have to worry about storing bunches of loose leafed paper some where.

Oh for sure.. I have loose newsprint, but all the rest are in those sketchbooks I was talking about. There is a blick store in Pasadena on Raymond I believe! That's where I go. I highly recommend going.!

Nope..... Less then micheals and Aaron brothers. It's a dream come true for artist.. None of the crafts, and scrapbook mess. You can buy one pencil or 20. For sure you should go!!

I'll have to plan a trip. I have LOTS more questions to ask. If you don't mind answering. This is one of the ones that I want to get off of my chest. Do you erase even while sketching, and have you ever used ballpoint pen to sketch with?

brianpitt In reply to spongefox [2013-06-16 05:05:49 +0000 UTC]
Feel free and ask!? I don't mind at all. As you. Practice more and more you get in to the flow of a lot of things, line weight, proportions, etc.. I have built up a level of comfort with many different characters to where erasing really isn't there. Not to say erasing is a bad thing. But if I were to get to a point to where I was erasing soo much that the piece just looked thrashed I would just start the sketch over and over til I got it right.. Thats what a sketch is there for.. After I get the sketch right I move to a light table and tighten it up if needed for me to see better if I was going to move to photoshop to ink. I really like the feel to the Faber Castell color pencil to where I use only that for sketches. As an artist you'll find your own tool of choice..software etc. I don't use ballpoint just based on preference... I don't like ink, I just doesn't feel right to me. Its easier for me to just move to photoshop or flash for ink clean up, cause if I goof up there is always undo!

I've been trying to draw and sketch with out erasing, but it just makes the drawing to me not seem really neat and clean. A finished product if you will. Also, I find it important to have both traditional and digital works in your galleries. So in case (heaven forbid) something happens to your computer, you'll have your pencils and such. And, it wouldn't hurt to at least practice inking by hand traditionally once in a while.

Impressive! The rapid flowing movement and materials are looking good here. It's that chaos that makes the characters extremely expressive. :3
