Description So lots of the feedback I have gotten from the pros around here has stated that I need work on anatomy.

I figured I would quickly sketch out a male human figure and see where I came out. I was going for anatomically correct (minus a "package") but quick. I did not want to over think it or edit myself too much. I was really going for my tendencies, not perfection.

So then I did a side by side with what looks like your standard doctors office chart (and another odd little fellow added for total contrast).

What stands out to me right off the bat was how close (correct) my distribution of "head height" placement was. Pretty much, my nipple line, crotch area and knees line up with the official proportions. So although I probabaly need work on proportions, I was close in the head heigth area.

So now the wrong stuff.
1) Head is too wide.
2) Shoulders too sloped
3) Deltoids too small
4) Obliques go way too low
5) Rectus Abdominus is too narrow
6) Crotch too low

Anyway, please let me know what you see.
I did this as an exercise (based on s recommendation) mainly for myself, but I would love any feedback.

Thank you,
~BoS

Since you asked...

He gets kinda scrawny from the waist down. Hands need work too. Hard to draw, easy to research. He doesn't have hips and his delts and ribs are kind of molded together.

For muscle, as we should learn from life before exaggerating into comic anatomy, I've bought Flex magazines and the like. It helped me a great deal. Lots of interesting shading ideas there and it is as real as you can get.

my 2 cents

Thank you for your two cents Russ,
I agree with your take on his lower half. The hands were not really completed, I guess I was just really looking for where they fell on his thigh (but I shoulda finished them anyway). His pecs and ribs?

I have studied muscle magazines and books for years. I am a Health Club Manager and have been around this stuff for half my life. This [link] drawing was generated using a lot of reference from Schwarzenegger's Encylopedia of Modern Body Building, just then exagerating some areas (the left arm is Schwarzeneggers, the right arm is Lee Preists, the calves are Tom Platz ). I think my main area of concern in regards to reference is that I rarely use any. I get in a rush to complete the artwork, without building up anything solid (foundation as would say). I really do need to just use it more, God knows I have a bunch lying around!

Thanks again for the help,
I appreciate it.

The pleasure was mine. I love talking shop. Helps me with my own game.

I am finding more and more lately that reference is essential. From bodies or recently (in the Fall of the Cowl bit in my gallery) the design of the gun and texture of the alley.

Learn as ya go...

It really is good proportionally, which is were I am a failure lol, so to take it to the next step I think you should work the positions of the muscles. In this particular drawing I think the top half is too wide, and his hips could be wider to make him look more stable. But its looking really good in general
