I think you could take a self portrait that is at least this good. To begin with you have a much better looking model to work with. All you need is soft front-light and a bright background that you nuke with lots of light. I used the flashes for this shot.
And when you take portraits outside you just have to remember to have your subject in the shadows. Sunlight makes you squint your eyes and give hard shadows. The shade opens eyes and give smooth shadows, and thats almost always better.

Can I finally ask you HOW did you take this picture? Always 2 flashes? The details are really a lot..

In this photo I use 3 flashes. If you look at the eyes you will see two reflections. Those are white umbrellas with flashes. The last flash is an really old one that I only use to light the background.

I use MK-RC7 wireless remote flash triggers. They cost about $30 for a transmitter and receiver kit.
You could just use optical trigger or flashes with optical slave mode. I have a YN560 flash and it work really good in slave mode.
