Description you told me that
there was nothing beautiful
in sadness –

but i need to believe
that someone is going to see beauty
in the way the broken shards
of my heart
fall like loose teeth
from my sleeve.

and that maybe someone could love me
despite the albatross
around my neck
tightening like a noose
every time i think of the things
i've done wrong.

and i'm trying not to become
my sadness
but it slides down my throat
like my bottle of writer's tears
filling up the cracks
in my bones.

you told me that
there was nothing beautiful
in sadness –

and i tried not to cry,
because i think
that's the only beautiful thing
about me.

Really like the imagery.

I don't really think sadness itself is beautiful, but you have a beatiful way of writing about these things

it's a very real argument i had with myself a lot back when i wrote this, actuallyβ€”the concept of sadness being beautiful.
i wrote this during a very different time in my life, where i was really stuck in nothing but my sadness,
and it's not that i necessarily find it beautiful, especially now, but when you're stuck in a bit of a pit,
and it's all you feel, it's…really painful to hear people say it's not beautiful.
because that's all you are. it's easy to get defensive.

that was the inspiration for the poem, i guess! i in no way, shape, or form think mental illness should be taken lightly,
or seen as something beautiful, and i NEVER want to glorify it in the slightest,
but when you're in that place, things get a little skewed.Β
at least, they were for me.

anyway! sorry, i didn't mean to word vomit at you haha. i just started thinking about this again!
it's funny how much a year or two can do for the mind.

anyway, thank you so much! i'm glad you enjoyed this.

It's actually a helpful explanation, I think. So it's like that sadness becomes like your identity or the only thing defining you and so when people say sadness is not beautiful it's like their saying (even if not intended) you're not beautiful? If I understood that right.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

brokenfragilethings In reply to Pereyga [2017-06-02 04:24:58 +0000 UTC]

yes! that is absolutely right.

and now, from a different mindset, i can see how the "sadness is beautiful" outlook is extremely detrimental. i agree it shouldn't be glorified.Β
but again, when you're in that place, it's so easy to feel hurt and want to defend yourself, when all you are is, well, sad.

so yes! you understood it exactly how it was intended.

and thank you so much for the comment and attempting! i really, really appreciate it!Β

Your writing is beautiful.

And you are too.

But if you can't, or don't want to, believe that, just know that I think you should at least find beauty in writing.

You have the ability to write about sadness in an achingly beautiful way ...Β  have you ever read the WingMakers poetry?Β  They have one about sadness called Warm Presence, and many other fragile things ... www.wingmakers.com/poetrychamb…

"I dreamed that I found a ransom note
written in God's own hand.
Written so small I could barely
read its message, which said:
"I have your soul, and unless you deliver --
in small, unmarked poems --
the sum of your sorrows, you will never
see it alive again."

They told you that

there was nothing beautiful

in sadness...

They told you that

a smile always

brought out the best

of you...

They told you that

sadness shouldn't be

allowed to overcome you,

despite the bites and itches

of consumption.

They told you that

because they want to see you

be happy...

and because they don't want

the same fate of themselves

from past lives

to befall on your

beautiful shoulders.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

brokenfragilethings In reply to Divergent-Flame [2013-12-22 05:03:06 +0000 UTC]

But sometimes it's not
as easy as they'd
like to think,
you know?

And sadness
shouldn't be allowed
to overcome you,
but sometimes
it does.

This was a lovely rebuttal, though, I enjoyed the contrast, and reading it. (:
Thank you!

But only as one walks

Away from the light

Shall one find themselves

Enveloped in darkness

But of course! :3
