Description
you offered her your rib. broken andgrateful, she accepted, muddy
fingers pressing
argent bone to tattered flesh. whole,
whole. she aches to be whole.
you offered her your body, diligent with want.
her hands became your religion, her mouth
your heaven. her name is an orison, the sound
honeyed to her ears
she is on her knees but you are the one praying.
god, god. she aches to be god.
he offered her the world, power ripe and
waiting in his hands. hungry and
lustful, she accepted, eager
lips spilling sweet, swallowing seed as
though she's done it
before.
she's done it before.
( she needs your rib no longer, don't you see? she licks the meat
off of her collection of bones, throws them in a pile
to her left; you had left her to rot under the eye of your
god, but she flourished.
suffer. )

This is one of the most beautiful and personally erotic pieces of literature I have ever had the pleasure to read. If you ever decide to write a book, please inform me. xoxo

Reminds me a bit of the story of Adam and Eve because of the part about the rib.
I like the format; the indented stanza in the parentheses is a very powerful ending to the uniform flow of the rest of it.
Keep writing.
And congratulations on the DD!

We definitely are. Or I was just raised in a stifling super-biblically-obsessed environment. Throw in an islamic reference and unless it's also a biblical reference it will pass right over my head.

Yeah. We is eddicated!
Yes, I might get some references to Islam as well, but only because I had a comparative religions course in college. I must say, it's very similar to Christianity and Judaism; it's like a mix of both. But that's probably because all the Biblical, Torah, and Q'uranic events happened in basically the same geographical location, which is probably why they call them the Holy Lands. Philosophy of the different religions of the world interest me greatly because I like seeing how similar different faiths are when it comes to core values and origin myths. Like the Epic of Gilgamesh is the same story as Noah's Ark, and I think all religions have a flood story so there must've been something in real life akin to a large flood because it's not likely that everybody is completely wrong about it. Makes one think.
If you haven't read Salman Rushdie's "Satanic Verses" and "Midnight's Children" novels, you should look into it. You learn a great deal about Islamic reference from that since in "Satanic Verses" there is a character called Gibreel (similar to Archangel Gabriel) and in "Midnight's Children" a character is called Addam Aziz and clearly meant to reference Adam as the first man, since that particular character is where the story starts.
I love reading novels inspired by other cultures. Especially India for some reason. Probably because it's referred to as the Land of all Gods. It's the coolest thing ever.
One writer I love a lot is Indu Sundaresan who wrote "The Twentieth Wife" "Feast of Roses" "Splendor of Silence" "In the Convent of Little Flowers" "Shadow Princess" and "The Mountain of Light" in that order I believe. She's a fabulous writer and really brings history and India a lot of life for those of us who have never had the pleasure of experiencing the culture.
Anyway, enough of me rambling. Sorry for the long-ass reply. I got excited.
Have a great day!

that's very relieving to hear, because i did model it after adam and eve! that's why i was worried about the biblical references, and offending someone of faith by gently twisting the story around in a different light.
i'm really glad you caught it!
thank you for your kind words! i very much appreciate it.

I'm glad I got it then. I don't think it's offensive at all; the King James story of Adam and Eve was more offensive as it made Eve out to be the stupid and evil one. But in the original text, Adam was present when the snake talked to Eve, and Eve questioned what the snake was telling her to do while Adam just sat there like a bump on a log and didn't question anything when Eve gave him some forbidden fruit to try. And then the idiot passes the blame on to her when God got angry at them for eating it. This world is full of stupid men who blame women for their temptations. Weird.
Anyway, I really like this poem. And you're welcome. You deserve the kind words because you're a good writer. I'm glad the people in charge of DDs picked this.

His rib. Religious parallel or just an innuendo?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
brokenfragilethings In reply to ToastedHope [2015-08-24 13:03:59 +0000 UTC]
religious parallel — one of the tellings of adam and eve say that god created eve from adam's rib, which is why i specifically chose rib, and tried to keep it the only bone given any specifics. however, there are some other double meanings in here so i can understand the assumption. ultimately, if you see it as an innuendo, i don't blame you haha

This is an awe-inspiring piece. Your use of repetition, the clever religious symbolism, and the overall flow of the poem blend together so well that it's hard for me to describe, and I love that last verse where the poem twists and takes on a whole new meaning entirely, and everything you learned that came before it stitches together just right once you've learned the aftermath. Again, I'm in awe.

oh my goodness—and here i am, feeling rusty!
this was such a nice thing to read. you seem to have a way of that!
thank you so, so much. i was kind of nervous about it, and all of the
biblical implications. i'm glad you enjoyed it! so much. oh gosh.

Aw, thanks. ^^ I just get a kick out of making other people feel good about their work, I guess.
And the biblical implications, in my opinion, make the piece even better! The religious implications make that last verse have a lot more impact.

brokenfragilethings In reply to HatterShadow [2015-08-05 05:57:59 +0000 UTC]
thank you! it's, obviously, kind of about adam and eve but. sort of a different take, i suppose c: so i'm glad it fit!

HatterShadow In reply to brokenfragilethings [2015-08-06 00:17:38 +0000 UTC]
Oooh, gotcha. I actually think I like the implications of this one a lot better than the original. Because, like, Adam's a real jerk, tbh. Not a lot of people talk about what he did to his first wife, Lilith, but it was pretty messed up. So seeing him suffer is sort of gratifying, in a way.
But even outside of the religious context, if you apply this to an actual relationship, it's still really satisfying.

YEAH HONESTLY there's a lot of thing about the bible/religious stories that
people like to pretend exist
BUT THAT AINT MY BUSINESS THO
but anyway! i'm so, so glad you enjoyed it and
could apply to a real relationship! i didn't even think of it that way,
and honestly, i like it! so thank you!

Aaaw, no problem!! ^^ That's one of the beauties of writing like this, isn't it? Multiple interpretations? It's always a great sign when your writing can be taken many ways.
