Description What began as a simple moment of rest turned into a long, peaceful nap for Fluttershy.

It's time to get up, though! There are animals to tend to!

With this picture, I worked on making the shadows as realistic as I could. I did my best to analyze where the shadows were coming from, and manipulated my shadowing to compensate. This marks the most work I've ever put into shading, and I hope it shows. I'm loving the end result, and I hope you do too! Enjoy.

The light made this picture, and I enjoyed making this photo because of it.

It's Fluttershy. She can shatter any preconception we have of adorableness.

Hey, this is a pure awesomeness! Looks so warm and comfy! If only she could be a bit more sunk in the bitter and hued a little bit with yellow/green...
Whatever, I love it!

Looks damn aweosme, mate
Did you do another layer of light coming down on top of her, or is it just me xD I see just a little mistake on the top of her mane, but that's not important at all

Looking at this reminds me about how much I still have to learn ^^ Keep it up!

May I ask how you do the lightining if the object(pony) is underneet a tree, so the light falls through the tree....do you use a simple round soft brush, or how do you do that?

Bryal In reply to colorfulBrony [2013-06-12 19:49:04 +0000 UTC]

I did do another layer of light on her (besides the white-ish glow on top of her). It isn't very pronounced at all, but I wanted to have a bit of the god rays passing over her.

As for the leaves, here's my general process:

I make the shadow of Fluttershy first (using a black copy of her), and move it where I want it. I take that default leaf brush and apply it using the eraser tool. That makes leaf-shaped holes on the top of the shadow (the size of the leaf brush can be altered to make the holes bigger or smaller). After that, I apply gaussian blur to the shadow, and set the opacity of it. The end result looks like the light has gone through the leaves. It takes a lot of trial and error, considering how that leaf brush applies itself, but it's totally worth it to me.

Kay, thx a lot I think I got the idea ;D And kinda can imagine how I can aply this on the technique I use for shading ^^ thx ;D
It's always nice to have a PIRL artist you can look up too

Heh, I look up to you and other PIRL artists too. I see techniques I either have never thought about, or have never thought I could do.

I guess we all pull inspiration from each other.

I actually was working on it last night, but it got too late, and I didn't finish. It has been a very deceptively hard piece of work.

I should have it up by tonight (I hope).

Did you add the godrays or were they part of the original image? Either way they're spot on

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bryal In reply to JPDANGER [2013-06-12 19:39:41 +0000 UTC]

The god rays were already on the picture. I did adjust the shading on Fluttershy to match the god rays, though. Tedious work, to be sure, but I do love the end result.

THE DAPPLED LIGHT ON HER MANE O_O. Fluttershy isn't in the picture. she is the picture. she's there in the forest, in the photo that was taken. she is a part of the forest here.

unspeakable wondrous godlike work, mate. while you may not work much on quantity, you're quality completely shatters everyone else's in that aspect.

Absolutely breathtaking work! Your studiousness in making the shadows as accurate as possible really paid off, and it looks just like Fluttershy is laying down in the path.

I think I'm getting better with that leaf effect. I takes a lot of playing around with to get it the way I want it.
