Description This summer I've been doing a whole series of "Monsters and Girls" illustrations, and selling them as original art pieces on the Store Page of my official website.
This particular drawing was a lot of fun to color.

This drawing has already sold. But a few other original "monsters and girls" art pieces, are still available for sale at my website store.

I really love this piece. The girl is awesome, beautiful as always, and her being oblivious to the horror just outside her window is both terrifying and humorous. The creature is amazing! The way you've done the depth is spectacular, face in focus, the body blurred by distance and the rain. The hand on the window with fingers spread is a REALLY cool touch! The blue color just makes it perfect. Just an outstanding work!

I love this one! It has a such a spooky vibe about it. The fact that she doesn't even notice she could be staring in one of the comics she's reading is just great xD lol and the fact that you put in the details of some of your previous works on the covers is just genius I love it. Its great. Especially all the attention to detail. You truly never disappoint.

Thank you so much FeFe. You always write the kindest comments. I'm glad so many people have noticed - and enjoyed - the book covers. It's a small detail that I assumed most viewers would overlook. But yeah, turning my other illustrations into sleazy horror pulp novel covers and sneaking them in there was probably the most fun part of doing this whole illustration! I also kinda love the implied suggestion that my cute female characters would get naughty thrills from reading about the "sexy horror adventures" of my other cute female characters. I know that's dumb but it makes me laugh.

and no. Its not dumb I completely understand you c:
I think its a nice touch. And it just adds more to the picture and tells you more about the girl we're looking at other than she's cute lol. Its tells you what kind of things she likes, and what interest her. You tell a story with all the details you add rather than just drawing a good picture.

Speaking of E.C. Comics and how it's "Too bad they don't make them like they used to ..."

I can't tell you how many times I have talked to comic book company art directors and publishers at conventions, who have flipped through my art books or my Wulf and Batsy comics, and WHO ALL SAY: "Great stuff! This old fashioned horror art is so much fun, this is what the comics industry needs more of..."

But then, when I say (as gently and politely as possible...) "Well, here it is! Old fashioned horror comics is what I do! If you like my comics, I'm looking for a publisher!" (or, alternately, "I'd love to work with/for you, and make some horror comics!")
...They've always got a reason why it won't sell, or there's no audience for it, or they like it but their boss says it's "too cartoony"...

Maybe it's just me. Maybe publishers really do want this kind of old-fashioned, fun horror comics stuff, but mine isn't good enough for them. Or maybe my stuff IS good enough for them, but something about me as a person puts them off. I don't know. I can't figure out where the "disconnect" is...

But more and more it seems to me like, every art director and publisher will SAY "this is so fun, this is what comics needs more of..." but when you actually nudge them to bite the bullet and publish "this kind of fun old-fashioned horror comics"... they just won't go for it.

My personal theory is, no matter what they say - they just don't have any real confidence that there is actually a market for it.
Then again, maybe they just don't like me. Who knows.

Well, that's my sob story.
Boo-Hoo.

I guess I'll just keep plugging away in TV Animation where the real money, and benefits, and retirement plans are. heh.
Oops... sorry, that was a little bit of sour grapes on my part.
Anyway for the above reasons, I've pretty much given up on trying to "break into comics".
At this point in my career, I just figure, I'll keep doing what I'm doing... And if any comics art directors or publishers decide they want me to work on their horror comics, I would love the opportunity, and I hope they would let me know.

R-Complex25 In reply to BryanBaugh [2014-08-18 07:25:07 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm.... have you researched the comic publishers you've approached?Β  That could help a lot. I remember as a writer I would get rejections because I was sending horror stories to random publishers instead of to ones that cateredΒ toΒ horror genre's. As a adult/pinup anthro artist I got rejected many times from groups and was even one of the casualties of a paysite's open audition in the first week.

But if I let every slammed door get me down, I'd never know when the door to opportunity would open.Β  I think it was Groucho Marx that said, "If opportunity ain't knockin, build a door."

Here's a crazy thought , have you tried to design E.C. style greeting cards or e-cards? That's one way to get your art out to the people on a large scale. That might open doors up in a way you haven't tried before. You never know, a change of tactic could allow you to bypass all the red tape you've encountered so far.

Just some food for thought .

You have amazing work and it would be a shame to let something this cool go to waste, just my two cents.

Haha. Trust me, I know how to make a proper submission.
And I am not at all desperate for work or "exposure". I make a very nice, comfortable living as a storyboard artist in the TV Animation industry. I'm doing fine. I was just saying, comics are also fun to do now and then as a side gig, so I would enjoy getting more involved with it, preferably working for/with established publishers on horror and monster titles.

But, after 20 years of poking around the comics industry... enjoying a few small opportunities here and there, but usually getting the brush-off ...or meetings that sound promising but ultimately fizzle out and lead nowhere... It's become pretty obvious to me that the "big" comics publishers with actual money to spend, are not real super interested in the style of comics I do.

Comics publishers today DO put out horror comics. But they want everything to have (what they call) a "realistic" art style... (I would call it "flat, boring, and photo-referenced to death", Haha.)

The old-fashioned 1950's E.C. Comics or 1970's Warren Creepy Magazine art style - with a more exaggerated look (which modern publishers call "too cartoony"), is totally "out of fashion" right now. They will even publish reprints of that old stuff. But they aren't interested in making NEW horror comics that look like that.

It's frustrating. But it's not the end of the world, because my full-time career in animation keeps me busy and well-paid. I can afford to do my own thing at my own pace and self-publish. Those who care, will find it.

I really have to compliment the use of lighting. The glow of the lamp off panel and the eerie blue light from the stormy night outside really adds to the feeling of creepiness. Like as a viewer and fan of old horror movies I can almost imagine the lighting flashing outside and the girl noticing the creeper's shadow but the next flash he's gone. The moment before this is what I think you captured.Β

I also love all the books and fact you made the other images you did in this series as book covers.

No problem, you really capture the old Tales from the Crypt comic style of horror in my opinion.

I did something similar on a Resident Evil one page comic I did. wondermanrules.deviantart.com/…

I basically added in silly shit in the conference room Leon is in to see if anyone would pick all of it out. I mostly did it because the original screen shots of the area just show paper, posters and debris everywhere but you can't actually read them. But I actually had more fun adding in all that silly crap than doing the sort of serious stuff in it.
