Description
The movie "Creepshow" - is one of my all-time favorite films. I saw it at the age of ten, when it first came out in 1982. I was instantly obsessed with it. Here was a horror movie with an old-fashioned graveyard zombie, a plant monster, a furry maneater, water-zombies, and a million evil bugs. It also had crazy bright colors, an exaggerrated comic book visual style, and one of the spookiest musical scores ever recorded (by John Harrison). On top of all that, Creepshow also played an important role in my horror education.
It was the movie that first exposed me to Stephen King (who wrote it), and fired me up to start reading his novels, no matter how long they were.
It was the movie that introduced me to George Romero (who directed it), though I knew about "Night of the Living Dead" before that, it was "Creepshow" that really got me addicted to his films.
It was the film that taught me who Tom Savini was (because he made the monsters and did all the gore special effects), and made me start following his work.
But most importantly of all, Creepshow was the movie that introduced me to Bernie Wrightson (who illustrated the comic book adaptation). Oh, I'd seen Wrightson's work in the "Swamp Thing" and "House of Mystery" comics by that point, but the "Creepshow" comic book was the thing that made me memorize his name and start paying attention. (Which is ironic, because when I look back at this same material today, I actually find his "Swamp Thing" work to be far superior...) But anyway, once I made the connection that this was the same illustrator from those other books, Wrightson instantly became my favorite artist, the guy I looked at and said, "THAT'S how I wanna draw when I grow up!" Well, I'm still nowhere close to Bernie, but I try.
To this day, Creepshow is still in my top ten all-time favorite movies list. Anybody who has seen it will of course remember the story called "Something To Tide You Over"... which involves Ted Danson's gruesome death in the ocean... and his subsequent return as a green, sea-weed tangled, saltwater dripping zombie...

great job, even if it is my least favorite segment of creepshow. i've always been partial to the Lonely Death of Jodie Verril and Father's Day (although who's ever heard of Father's day cake.)
I always figured you were a Bernie nut. I see some of his crazy posing in some of your work.

Thank you! I love every inch of Creepshow but my "favorite segment" changes every couple years or so. I think "Something To Tide You Over" is easily the best written story of the bunch... this mode of killing someone in the surf is just so hellishly ingenious... It's one of those moments in the film that genuinely makes me squirm, imagining drowning that way. If you've ever played in the ocean and gotten a mouthful of saltwater it becomes easy to imagine how Ted Danson's death would feel. Yeek! Sure gives me the creeps every time.

Although this story wasn't my favorite segment from the first "Creepshow" (that was "The Crate"), the movie was also part of my own early horror education. Along with "Evil Dead II" and "Return of the Living Dead" (which we about on the "Tar Man" piece you drew), it showed me the variety and unique number of other genres horror could brush up against, like black comedy, which these three did so well.
Great work on this!

Oh yeah. I'd love to do an anthology (or at least be a part of one) that is a throwback to all those great old kinds of pulpy stories.

I love this. I see Bernie every now and then at a con in Louisville KY. He is a nice guy. I wish I could talk to him a bit more but he is a busy man.

I wish I could talk to him more often, too. He is an incredibly nice guy and has an art studio that is about a 20 minute drive from my place. He has invited me over a couple times and those few visits were really wonderful, but I haven't heard much from him in a few years now. I miss talking to him.

He strikes me as a bit reclusive. I enjoy talking to him but he always seemed a little uncomfortable in big groups of people. I hope he is at Wonderfest this year, I wrote a report on him, and did a piece of art in an attempt at his style. I received the schools artistic excellence award for it.

I saw most of Creepshow a ear or two during the 13 nights of Halloween thing they do on TV nowadays.
1st of all: George A. Romero + Stephen King= bloody good stuff!
It also cemented my theory that Tom Savini is a Genius. He's one of the few badasses that are still alive from the times that Horror was actually good. Creepshow 2 was okay, but too little stories, nudity and lack of creepy atmosphere made it inferior to the original.
I'm pissed though that they're planning on re-making it.

Definetly one of the top horror vintage movies, I actually love this movie, and the sequel (but not the third one, that one to be honest totally suck) and yeah I remember this stroy, it was the one in which appears Leslie Nielson from "The naked Gun"

That was a good spooky score for that one. Not many horror movies do good scores these days. I'm left with listening to Midnight Syndicate and Nox Arcana for my "horror movie soundtrack" fix.

HA! I can relate to that comment totally! Me, too!! I have a huge collection of horror movie soundtracks, from common to obscure films but they are almost all from pre-1999 movies. Tracking down the Creepshow soundtrack was like the hunt for the holy grail and took many years but I have it now and it is one of my ultimate favorites.
Not many horror films made since the 1990's have had great scores. And yes, since then I have been listening to lots of M.S. and N.A. We should discuss this further in a NOTE or email. I am always looking for more horror music to draw to and could use some more recommendations. I may have some for you, also.

Love it! Love it! It's funny, I had not even scrolled down to read the notes when I thought that this picture reminded me of that clip in Creepshow. I agree that Creepshow was one of the best flicks of it's type ever made. Keep up the great work.
