Description The movie "Creepshow" - is one of my all-time favorite films. I saw it at the age of ten, when it first came out in 1982. I was instantly obsessed with it. Here was a horror movie with an old-fashioned graveyard zombie, a plant monster, a furry maneater, water-zombies, and a million evil bugs. It also had crazy bright colors, an exaggerrated comic book visual style, and one of the spookiest musical scores ever recorded (by John Harrison).

On top of all that, Creepshow also played an important role in my horror education.

It was the movie that first exposed me to Stephen King (who wrote it), and fired me up to start reading his novels, no matter how long they were.

It was the movie that introduced me to George Romero (who directed it), though I knew about "Night of the Living Dead" before that, it was "Creepshow" that really got me addicted to his films.

It was the film that taught me who Tom Savini was (because he made the monsters and did all the gore special effects), and made me start following his work.

But most importantly of all, Creepshow was the movie that introduced me to Bernie Wrightson (who illustrated the comic book adaptation). Oh, I'd seen Wrightson's work in the "Swamp Thing" and "House of Mystery" comics by that point, but the "Creepshow" comic book was the thing that made me memorize his name and start paying attention. (Which is ironic, because when I look back at this same material today, I actually find his "Swamp Thing" work to be far superior...) But anyway, once I made the connection that this was the same illustrator from those other books, Wrightson instantly became my favorite artist, the guy I looked at and said, "THAT'S how I wanna draw when I grow up!" Well, I'm still nowhere close to Bernie, but I try.

To this day, Creepshow is still in my top ten all-time favorite movies list. Anybody who has seen it will of course remember the story called "Something To Tide You Over"... which involves Ted Danson's gruesome death in the ocean... and his subsequent return as a green, sea-weed tangled, saltwater dripping zombie...

YES - Zombie Ted Danson for the win!! This was always my favorite part of the movie, because it's about undead justice (my favorite horror cliche).

Cool glad you like it! My personal favorite Creepshow segment was always a toss up between "The Crate" and "Father's Day" but there's no denying, "Something To Tide You Over" was the creeeepiest of them all.

To me, it was "They Creep Up On You" because I hate cockroaches and the scene where the roaches burst out of Upson Pratt's corpse always made me squeamish.

I came to appreciate it even more after learning about Revenants - which they seem to be, as they are both ghostly and zombie-like at different times. At least, that's how I understood the segment. There are stories about such "entities" where I live, in Massachusetts.

Zombies are just mindless flesh-eating creatures, reveneants are very different as they are vengeful spirits who come for revenge or avenge their deaths like say Bobby/Stanley from Vault of Horror/Tales from the Crypt Fitting Punishment comic/TV episode, The Crow and here.

Even Dr. Freudstien from House by The Cemetery is either a reveneant or Frankenstein creature type being who has immortality from experiments and drinks blood from victims.

The Pet Sematary reanimated humans/animals aren't zombies either but they are demon possessed corpses, it said in the novel that a Wendigo (a bad Native American/Canadian cannibalistic and psychic spirit demon of legends who can turn living humans into cannibals if one is touched by it) soured the Micmac ground with dark magic and cursed it for whatever dead corpse is buried there will be reanimated in a day as a bad former shell of their selves and the Indians left the ground to relocate somewhere else. The animals and humans like Gage, Timmy Batterman, Church, Rachel and Gus (from the film adaptation's sequel) were possessed by the Wendigo demon and come back as demons who return to torment the living as they know secrets in living humans's closets (not the literal closets) as they are also similar to Deadites in some way and are also puppets for the Wendigo spirit demon.

This is awesome! And this is my favorite Creepshow segment if for nothing more than Nielsen's performance and John Harrison's music.

I'd shoot those fuckers head's off with a 4 bore rifle, their heads would be completely destroyed. I think that Richard survived, cause he can hold his breath for a long time. I think that these 2 deserved to die, hail Richard.

actcually i read the comic itself at a younger age and have to agree, it is a great write/read! I really cant comment on the movie itself since i never got to see it (something in me rarely lets me watch movies after i've read the books XD) But this is so amazingly done! the colors, the zombie expressions combined with the lifeless eyes bent on one though alone? revenge? fantastic!

BryanBaugh In reply to Ebony-Night [2009-11-01 20:57:49 +0000 UTC]

Aww, man, do yourself a favor. The movie and comic are different but they go hand-in-hand. Also, remember Creepshow is one case of a movie that was made first, the comic was based on it. Not the other way around. But I understand where you are coming from. None of the Stephen King movies live up to the books for me either. Except Creepshow and maybe Stand By Me.

Why thank you!! So glad to hear you like my stuff. The reviews on my Hack/Slash issues have been mixed. I just have a very different style from what the previous artists have done and a lot of people have a hard time adjusting to something different!
