Description
Starting in the mid-1960's, and all the way through the 1980's there was a huge outpouring of great horror films from Italy. Italian horror films are extremely passionate and visceral. Probably to an extent that would be considered "over-the-top" to the average movie fan. In the Italian horror films, every element - color schemes, music, imagery, and action - are played to the hilt. Italian horror films are obsessed with flesh and blood. They tend to be extremely erotic and violent. ...And very artsy and operatic.Of all the major Italian horror film directors, Lucio Fulci is definitely the coldest, and the most brutal. He was not overly interested in sex (an unusual quality among Italian horror film directors). Rather, his movies tend to be more focused on extreme horror imagery and graphic, gory violence.
Fulci's most famous work was his 1979 film "Zombie". That one is definitely the biggest crowd-pleaser of the Fulci filmography, and the movie that most Fulci fans will cite as their favorite. "Zombie" is also probably the best Fulci movie to see first, if you are unfamiliar with the man's work, or if you are unfamiliar with the bizarre, gushing tone of Italian horror films in general. "Zombie" is probably the most straightforward and satisfying Fulci horror film, because it contains many great, memorable scenes and is therefore most accessible to a wider audience.
But personally, I must say, his 1981 film "The Beyond" was always my favorite. "The Beyond" takes the same level of graphic horror imagery in "Zombie" and uses it to tell a more complex story. This is one of those horror movies you have to watch more than once in order to completely “get it”. The first viewing is a shocking assault of seemingly disconnected gore scenarios, weird characters, and goofy, man-eating monster spiders. It leaves you wondering if you just watched a movie made by a certified lunatic. But the truth isn't that simple. On a lower level, underneath its deranged surface texture, "The Beyond" is a surreal experience - a nightmare work of abstract art - that purposefully leaves its final conclusions up to the viewer's own interpretation.
I won't even bother trying to explain what the story of "The Beyond" is about. Perhaps I should just leave you with the tag-line from the poster, which sums it up best of all: "Behind this doorway lie the terrifying and unspeakable secrets of Hell. No one who sees it lives to describe it. …And you shall live in darkness for all eternity..."

Has anyone here ever noticed that the 1997 film Event Horizon is basically The Beyond in space? (With elements of Hellraiser to boot.)

I recall, when Event Horizon came out, a lot of my fellow horror fans were gushing over it, and saying, "This movie is like The Shining... But in space!"
I saw it and thought, "Yeah, okay, it's all right."
But I wasnt blown away like everybody else was. Not a bad movie, but I just wasnt the worlds biggest Event Horizon fan, myself.

Probably my favourite out of all your horror tributes. The harsh red colour scheme nails the movie's "Southern Gothic" atmosphere.

Amazing. I watched this movie for like the twentieth time about a minute ago. Gets better every time. Fulci was truly a master at what he did.

A beautiful piece of work. As a Eurohorror fan from the videostore boom of the early 80s I love the Italian Horror you captured the dreamlike mood of "The Beyond" really well.

I sadly only caught the last thirty minutes of this film on good old TCM Underground, but based on what little I saw (and the beautifully downer, WTF ending), I diffidently agree it was a nightmarish work of art, and look forward to TCM airing it hopefully sometime soon, and I don't say that about a lot of Italian horror films.
About the passionate nature of Italian horror films; would the works of Mario Bava fit into this description as well, even if his stuff was no where as shocking as Lucio Fulci output?

BryanBaugh In reply to Enshohma [2011-04-05 18:38:43 +0000 UTC]
Absolutely. I LOOOOVE Mario Bava. My favorite films of his (which I plan to do tribute illustrations of, eventually) are: "Black Sabbath" ; "Black Sunday" ; "Blood and Black Lace" (gotta be one of the best titles in the history of cinema) ; and "Baron Blood". All amazing films. He did a lot more movies but those are my favorites.
Actually I would say Bava's films are extremely passionate. The huge musical scores, the lush, intense color palette he used... Bava basically invented the bold color style that other Italian horror directors like Dario Argento would use later on... And I would argue that Bava's films can be quite shocking at times. IF you watch the original, uncut Italian versions. The graphic violence at the beginning of "Black Sunday", the brutal murder scenes in "Blood and Black Lace", "Baron Blood", etc can be extreme at times.

Fulci is a great zombie director, although Romero will always be my favorite zombie director. Great job on the composition. First rate detailing and stylization. I actually remember renting out an edited VHS version of "The Beyond" from Blockbuster many years ago. Damn, I feel old

Oh trust me, I've got a soft spot for Romero, too... Personally I can't pick a favorite zombie film director. I just like different movies, some more than others. Oh and by the way thanks for your kind words on my illustration!

In addition to the gore and lingering on an unpleasant scene longer than any other director would (Which I love him for!!) I really thought Fulci (and his FX people) were really able to utilize that sense of rotting, putrefying flesh and general decay..Its hard to explain..the different color goo and fluids..the sound effects..Almost like you could imagine how awful the scenery would smell if you could smell it..
The atmosphere mixed with the dream like scenery and horrific gore is what really set Italian horror apart (which other than Argento were really just rip off exploitation cinema storywise for lack of a better term..).
What do you think?

BryanBaugh In reply to single-leg [2011-03-02 18:26:06 +0000 UTC]
I agree with you. Italian horror films had a style and an atmosphere all their own. Of course, in the 70's and 80's both Fulci and (especially) Argento were just following the trail blazed by Mario Bava (the true father of Italian Horror) in the 60's.
When you mention Fulci "lingering on an unpleasant scene longer than any other director would" I can't help thinking of George Romero and William Lustig - two American directors who also tended to linger on really nasty visuals. Of course both Romero and Lustig had Tom Savini creating spectacular gore effects for them, so you can understand their reasoning!

They need to start releasing Fulci films on IFC for crying out loud.
And my parents think I'm wierd for being a horror nut. ( full blooded Italian)
But is this the one where the dead corpse in the bathtub wakes up and rams a woman's head into a coat hanger?
