Description THE BURNING

Whenever I post one of those Deviant Art Journals where I say, “Hey guys! Tell me some suggestions of things you’d like to see me draw!” there are always 2 or 3 people who will say, “Do a tribute drawing of The Burning!”

For those unfamiliar with it- “The Burning” was an early 1980’s slasher movie… one of the less popular ones, that never had any sequels. But it’s actually pretty well made. And it definitely has its own strong cult following of fans.

Personally, I wasn’t as big a fan of “The Burning” as I was for some of the other early 80’s slasher flicks, but the killer character from this film – named “Cropsy” – was designed and created by special makeup effects genius Tom Savini, and looks really great in the film.

Oh yeah and if you are wondering, a girl in the movie really does wear the exact outfit shown in this illustration. I love that stupid T-shirt with the big lips. Only a kid of the early-80’s could think that was cool.

I knocked out this illustration really fast… Just sat down and drew it in about an hour and a half, and colored it even faster. I wanted to post something quick - in time for Halloween!

Brilliant. What did you make of the new Nightmare on Elm Street?

Thanks -

To answer your question - I try to stay open minded and judge each of the new horror remakes as fairly as possible. I refuse to go into them with a chip on my shoulder, as a lot of horror fans do. And I have enjoyed several of the horror remakes over the past few years. That said, I thought the recent Nightmare on Elm Street remake was pretty lame. JEH did a fine job as Freddy... It was a very different Freddy, but not a bad recreation. And he had a few fine little moments throughout. But overall, the film was painfully weak. I wanted to love it so much, but I was bitterly disappointed.

Ah, I've seen that film. Its good to see you do a tribute picture of another sleeper hit. Along with this film, I do remember two other slasher films that came out the same year, My Bloody Valentine and The Prowler. Have you seen those?

Oh yes I own them both on DVD also. I was a little bit disappointed with "The Prowler" but I am a HUGE fan of "My Bloody Valentine" - the original AND the remake. And as you can probably guess that is another movie I want to draw a tribute to... one of these days. Hey - maybe I will try to do that on February 14th!!! haha.

Yet kids of the 2000's think suggestive writing on the butt of jeans is cool...

What happened to the girl in the movie?

I thought you said it wasn't that good?

It seems pretty obscure. I'm not sure I can find it.

I didn't say it wasn't good. I said I didn't like it as much as some other slasher films from the same era. The Burning IS a well-made flick, just not one of my top favorites of that genre. You can find it, if you look. It's out on dvd. Check Amazon.com

The funny thing about this movie is Jason Alexander from Seinfeld was in it and it was he very first movie and his only horror movie he ever did .

Even funnier about this movie - Jason Alexander, who is now famous for playing a balding, pudgy, nerdy, socially awkward character on TV - played a macho, jock-type teenager with hair, who chased girls - in The Burning!

Actually that's another thing that is noteworthy about The Burning - this film was an early (or first) gig for several young talents in both cast and crew, who later went on to much bigger things (mostly non-horror). I have read that a very young Holly Hunter is also in there somewhere, but she must either be so young that she is unrecognizable, or she must play a small background character with no dialogue - because I've looked and haven't been able to spot her.

Cropsy looks just like the killer Chris Vale from the crud film Halloween Night. I'm betting that whoever decided to make Halloeen Night tried to rip-off The Burning as well.
