Description The Rancor from "Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi".

Whenever I think of The Rancor, I always remember my little cousin Bradley. There were four of us Baugh grandkids. There was me, my sister, and my two cousins. In the summer of 1983, when "Return of the Jedi" came out, I was eleven - the oldest of the group, and Bradley was (I think) four - the youngest. During that summer I think Grandma and Grandpa Baugh must have taken us kids to see "Return of the Jedi" probably six times. And every single time, my job was to sit next to Bradley and cover his eyes during the Rancor scene. It was the only scene in the movie he was scared of, and I was the only one he trusted, to know exactly when The Rancor Scene was about to start, and exactly when it was completely over. Also, I guess if he had asked Grandma to cover his eyes that would have been sissy. But somehow asking Big Cousin Bryan to cover his eyes was okay. It was one of those very Wally Cleaver and Beaver Cleaver type situations. Anyway, it's sort of goofy, but to this day every time I watch "Return of the Jedi", somewhere in the back of my mind I can still hear Bradley's four-year-old voice saying, "Just don't forget to cover my eyes at the Rancor Scene. Just don't forget to cover my eyes at the Rancor Scene!"

Haha!

I thought this scene was awesome, but I'll admit, there was a part I always skipped. When that poor Gamorrean guard squealed as he was eaten. I always felt sorry for him. So, I can understand your little cousin Bradley's pain.

I love the scene after where Luke's just killed it and one of the palace guards comes to look at the body and starts crying

Something about it was just so surreal and funny

A lot of creatures make me sad upon their death - the Rancor and the Cave Troll being top on the list... They weren't inherently evil as far as I was concerned, they just had no choice.

Now that is one scary Rancor!! The emotion you capture here is incredible!! I know some folks don't agree, but I thought all 6 Star Wars movies worked just fine, though episode IV is still far and away my favorite. But, yes both the Rancor and definitly Leia in that slave outfit are some of the very standout part of ROTJ. While I've seen a few of the animated Star Wars and read a couple of the books, for me the 6 movies are prety much what I stick too as well Star Wars wise these days. Like other sci fi (Star Trek) a lot of the stuff that has come after the last movie just way over complicates things for me and is too hard to keep up with it all. Take care and keep having fun!!

Thanks for your comments. I am right there with you. I say keep it simple. A good story must have a good ending and we got that through the journey of the 6 film series. No need for all these extraneous animated TV shows and novels. Just leave it alone and let it be finished. It's great just the way it is.

I have seen youre colection and I have to say that you do verry Nice work

I can think of 8 more "monsters" From the series: the Opee Sea killer, Clo-calw fish, and Sando Aqua Monster from the Nabboian abys(Episode one) the Nixu, Reak, and Alclay from the Ginosain Areena (episode two) the Dagota (garbage squid)that tried to eat Luke on the Death Star and the Deagoba Dragon-python that swallowed and spit out R2, have you given any consideration to drawing any of these

As stated in the "Artist comments" on all of my "Monsters of Star Wars" illustrations, I had a list of monsters all planned out. But just ran out of time to do them. Paying art gigs came along and took over all my time. Boo Hoo! Maybe I will get back to Star Wars at some point in the future.

These are awesome Bryan. But why only monsters that fought Luke? What do you have against Luke?

You know what you should draw next? Mynocks! Do a flock of a thousand Mynocks fighting Jabba the Hut while he's driving his sand barge. That's my favorite scene from Episode tue!

The look on the Gamorrean guard's face is awesome.

BryanBaugh In reply to InfraMan63 [2009-05-26 03:05:45 +0000 UTC]

Your second paragraph makes me wonder if this message is from Mike Baker or Mark Rickenbocker. Yeah it wasn't my intention to make all these drawings so Luke-centric, I was just drawin favorite monsters from the movies and Luke happens to be in all the scenes with em. I actually had a buncha other drawings planned (that I didn't get to) with other characters and other monsters. None of them had Mynocks. Sorry, Mark.

MrFacehug [2009-05-25 20:29:10 +0000 UTC]

F*cking Ay! I was right, and the rancor really kicks ass!

Now that you've done monsters from all of the movies in the original trilogy, it'd be awesome to see some from the prequel films. I'd love to see the underwater creatures from Phantom Menace or the arena monsters from Attack of the Clones! Just too bad there isn't a real creature fight in Revenge of the Sith... but perhaps you could do Grievous, to compensate?

BryanBaugh In reply to MrFacehug [2009-05-25 22:08:40 +0000 UTC]

I would love to see me do all those things too, but unfortunately "real" art assignments (in other words paying gigs) have come up and there is not enough free time these days for "personal projects". Eventually though, yes, I would love to get back to the Star Wars monsters. But don't expect it for a while.

Now Jabba had the right idea keeping this bad boy under the floor but Luke had to come along and f-things up for the poor Rancor Keeper.

Gotta love his little Rancor muppet legs too.

Great pic, diggn' the Guard's expression of "HOLY MUDDER A GOD!!!"

Still one of the all-time great movie monsters! If you do some prequel creatures, I gotta see your version of the Acklay.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BryanBaugh In reply to cantdrinkjustsix [2009-05-20 23:35:04 +0000 UTC]

The Acklay was my favorite monster from the Prequels, and he was definitely "on the list". Alas I never got around to doing any more than these three. Hopefully I can get back to this series in time. I would love to draw the Acklay. Note I said, favorite prequel Monster, not alien character. That would be Kit Fisto.
