Description My tribute to one of the greatest horror films ever made, John Carpenter's 1982 version of "The Thing".

This is easily Carpenter's best film. All the elements - the writing, direction, acting, special effects, and music work together perfectly. It's got the fear of isolation AND paranoia, and some of the most brilliantly insane horror sequences ever put on film - thanks to Rob Bottin who, like Carpenter, was also doing the best work of his whloe career here. A perfect movie by any standard.

Love that move.I herd that a Dutch directer named Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. is making the prequel to the film. Lest hope he doesn't fuck if up.(I have my doubts)

Great work!
I have always wondered what the original form of the "Thing" really is. I imagined it having insect legs or being an amorphous blob.

I first saw this movie in 82, when I was 10 years old, and I've been wondering the same thing myself, all the years since. I always imagined the original form of the Thing probably looked like the creature it became at the very end of the movie, with the giant Venus-Flytrap-like mouth full of giant sharp teeth. You know, the way it looked right before Kurt Russel threw the bomb at it. It would probably have that giant mouth-head with those wonderful Alaskan King-Crab legs growing out of the bottom of it. Just my opinion.

if you buy the collectors edition dvd theres an extra that has excellent david allen stop motion in it that was cut from the final scene that kinda gives the ending "Blair Monster" (the character "Blair" turned into the ending monster) a lot more awesomeness!
And shows its whole body!
Pure Awesomeness!!!!

BryanBaugh In reply to BrooksLeibee [2010-05-14 01:03:25 +0000 UTC]

Dude you are preaching to the choir. I probably own every edition of this movie that's ever been released. I got a copy I video taped off of HBO when I was a kid, the original VHS release, The old DVD, the special edition DVD, and the Blu Ray. It's ridiculous. But this is an example of one of those favorite movies of mine, where I want to make sure I have the best edition available - plus all the extras - so whenever I see some new version I don't already own, I feel compelled to buy it. So yeah, I've pretty much seen everything that's been put out there on "The Thing". That David Allen stop motion is indeed fascinating but I understand why it was cut out. It just doesn't match the look of the rest of the movie. The exact same situation arose with the ending of "The Howling".

Wonderful job on this, you drew each creature perfectly.

But it's not just the special FX, it's the acting and dialog. I especialy liked some of Richard Dicheart's lines. "Mac, I'm not a PRISONER!" And ofcourse who could forget Gary's immortal quote "I know you gentlemen have been through alot, but when you have the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIDE TO THIS FUCKING COUTCH!!!" lolz Movie makers now adays coujld take a few lessions from John Carpenter.

That movie furthered my theory that the thing to do when attacking aliens is curse repeatedly, why do they do it? Is it the Adrenial rush, some sort of genteic survial trait or possible it just feels bad ass and when your blowing up aliens with sticks of dynamite you might as well throw a few curses in their for good measures.

Haha, just got finished watching this for only the second time in my life. Really excellent tribute dude, you captured the actors faces perfectly even in your comic-style. Fantastic work on drawing the monsters too which I'd assume in some way would be even harder to draw.

I like you use of predominant blue, but then the single warm yellow from the flamethrower. It's very much a tribute to the feeling of the movie, trapped in a cold place with only fire to keep it AND the Things away. I like how you actually carried the yellow lighting onto the monsters themselves making it that they're actually THERE in the scene with the cast and not just in backdrops.
