Description I've always been a big reader / fan of H.P. Lovecraft's fiction. Love his crazy, cosmically horrifying imagination, his wordy, luxurious writing voice, and his dark, unswerving certainty regarding the unavoidable, miserable future for the pathetic little human race.

So I've been struck by the urge to do a series of illustrations based on his work.
...

Who says Lovecraft never wrote stories about strong female characters? You hear this criticism of his work all the time, but I say whoever thinks that never got around to reading "The Thing On the Doorstep".

Asenath Waite is a truly memorable Lovecraft villainess.

Well, okay, she is a girl who may (or may not) have been tainted with the monstrous Innsmouth bloodline, and was clearly possessed by the spirit of her evil undead sorcerer father, Ephraim. But that doesn't change the fact that she was a powerfully seductive young woman, who did some very evil things.

"The Thing on the Doorstep" also gets criticized for being such a "simplistic" horror story written so late in Lovecraft's career - right around the same time he was also churning out really complex, cosmic horror stories like the Cthulhu Mythos. Some critics seem almost bitterly disappointed in Lovecraft, for going back to his roots with this story, and doing something more simple and straightforward... at a point when he was "capable of so much more". Personally I disagree. As much as I am a fan of the Cthulhu stuff, I also have an equally strong appreciation for Lovecraft's straightforward horror stories. And this is by far one of his most unusual.

Cool. I like the skirt and socks you gave her. And Stuart Gordon says he wants this to be his next movie.

That would be interesting to see Stuart Gordon make a movie of this. Stuart Gordon seems to have similar tastes as myself when it comes to his choices of Lovecraft subject matter. He tends to make movies of the stories I really like.

I did like it. And his film for the second season was just amazing...but it was Poe, not Lovecraft.

Great work as always my friend.
I'm really looking forward to this series because your work seems like a perfect fit for Lovecrafts work and if there is one thing his stories have more of then any other writers it's horror/goth imagery.

Looking forward to the Mi-Go, the city from the rats in the walls, The Doom that Came to Sarnath

I've never heard the argument concerning "strong" female characters, but rather that if Lovecraft ever mentioned women in his stories, they were almost always negative and/or villainous portrayals. Oh well... nobody's perfect.

Great image for the story though. The very title itself was always chilling to me, because it was so generalized and left room for imagination before I had even read the story. Excellent work as always!

Ah, some Lovecraft artwork, very cool. I always did like some helpful illustrations with his work, since alot of his monster designs are really twisted and vague in a way.

I love this piece, and now shall have to seek out this story..it has escaped me somehow previously.

As to your drawing, mr. melty face back there is awesome, and love the work done on the plaid texture of the skirt, of all things....great stuff Bryan, thanks!

BryanBaugh In reply to InnsmouthFishwife [2010-07-30 21:09:17 +0000 UTC]

Ha, thanks! Read the story and the melty face will make sense. The plaid skirt was to reflect the fact that in the story she is essentially a schoolgirl.

Really good picture.
Also an excellent read. If Asenath's 'strength of character' comes from the soul of a male inhabiting her, then I wouldn't exactly say it was a progressive book. Hey, at least Lovecraft's treatment of sexism is better than his treatment of racism.

great image. but I have to disagree with your painting Asenath as a strong female character. she does put up a bit of a fight but can't stop the ghost of her father from making her do everything that she does in the story. in fact I think you could probably argue that the female entity known as Asenath doesn't even really exist in the story as a character, she's pretty much just a nice dress that Ephriam likes wearing.
