Description The 1931 version of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Fredric March is equally charming and tragic as Dr. Jekyll… then savage and terrifying when he turns into Mr. Hyde. For this performance, he won the Best Actor Academy Award.
Miriam Hopkins is both sexy and heartbreaking as Ivy, the doomed prostitute. My depiction of her is based on her near-nude scene in the movie, when she strips and swings her bare leg off the side of the bed, to tempt the good, incorruptible Dr. Jekyll. Yes, some old black-and-white movies did have nudity, sexuality, and graphic violence. This one sure does, and remains as shocking today, as it was in 1931.

This is traditional art. I drew it with good old-fashioned ink brush and a bit of hawk-quill, on bristol board paper. I only used Photoshop to add the digital gray tones. Hope you like it!

I know what you mean. But I always like to remind people - it's not the tools you choose to work with, but skill and years of practice, that make a good drawing! But anyway thanks for your very kind words! I do appreciate the compliment!

I must admit I've not yet seen Carry On Screaming.
That's one of those that's been on my "should really get around to seeing" list for years!

Very nice art based on one of my favorite movies! My compliments! Beautiful in black-and-white. No color required here. Fredric March and Miriam Hopkins were terrific in this film!

Sounds like you know the classics. Too few people do, these days. Thanks for your kind words on my illustration. I really made an extra effort with this one, because I feel this film gets overlooked and it deserves such respect. It really is one of THE best horror films of the 1930's.

Have you done any illustrations of Fay Wray in peril, from such films as "King Kong", "The Most Dangerous Game", "Mystery of the Wax Museum" or "Doctor X"? Fay's beauty and vulnerability (and often tattered clothing) really gave her films some added "oomph", and won the hearts of many Monster Kids like me.

I started a KONG illustration years ago and abandoned it because it just wasn't turning out as well as I'd like. One of those things I keep telling myself I need to go back and do over, but keep getting sidetracked with other projects.

But yeah I'm a big Fay Wray fan. I've seen all the movies you mention (and have nice copies of em all on BluRay or DVD - I bet our movie collections look a lot alike!!) After Kong, "Mystery of the Wax Museum" is my favorite. I would love to draw an illustration of that movie!

Something I've wondered about this classic tale: While at first it seems like a clear story of Duality/Good half and evil half, I've long suspected that in the original story, Dr. Jekyll didn't REALLY turn into a pure evil, seperate identity.

In fact, I think he wasn't quite so innocent. In his time, he lived in a society where everything was prim, proper and rather stiff and overly-sophisticated. So maybe he was abnormally repressed and prone to VERY dark, nasty thoughts while hiding as a good, polite gentleman. When he took that potion, it merely changed his appearance (perhaps to what he looked like inside), and he used this anonymity to WILLINGLY to commit crimes and enjoy the "freedom" like some drug. All this split personality stuff was just him going insane from overdosing.

But then again, maybe that was the point of the entire story? Just my new perspective of this story.

A great story leaves itself open to interpretation, so it can work on a personal level, for every reader.

I do. I DO like it!!! I have this on dvd as a 2 pack with the Spencer Tracy Jekyll and Hyde. The Spencer Tracy one is good to have as well, but the Frederic March one is so very superior in so many ways!!! It's the best one in my book, and I agree with you completely about it. Your tribute here is perfect, and perfectly intense!! great art!!

BryanBaugh In reply to dinobatfan [2012-08-23 16:05:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! Yes I own that DVD, too, with both versions on it. I love it like crazy.
On a side note, the 1922 silent version starring John Barrymore is also great, and another, totally different take on the character.

The purest of the various "Hydes" over the years. Like the original King Kong, this touches those special Freudian places. (Tho' I admit a soft spot for Hammer's Jekyll and Sister Hyde... more special Freudian places )
