Theseus was a major mythological hero and signifies a great change in Greek history.

One of the myths is that Theseus volunteered to sacrifice himself to the Minotaur. Human sacrifices were given to the Minotaur on a regular basis to feed the monster. But Theseus didn't plan on being eaten, he planned on slaying the monster. With some help, he managed to find the path straight to the Minotaur with a sword he sneaked in with him. And he was given a ball of yarn to leave a trail behind him to help find his way out.

In the scene of this illustration Theseus first meets the Minotaur in his domain.
