Description
So the first Thunder Force team kinda came and slipped by before I could make any art about them. In looking back, the story of their rise and fall was a good one, but it was a shame we never got to see them function as a team before the event that tore them apart took place. This time I'm hoping we will acknowledge the new Thunder Force team a little more before any new world-shaking event threatens the group's cohesion. Here is my small attempt at that by illustrating a group picture of the new fully official Thunder Force team as well as my thoughts and opinions on each member:
~Project-ShadowBlaze 's Cross &
=xdante619 's Wildman:
I included these two in the front because they were both founding members of the original Thunder Force team. They've both had the opportunity to get to know and work with one another, and we can see they've become friends over the course of their working relationship. While neither of them are team leaders, I see them as the foundation for the new Thunder Force.
~bogmonster 's Mighty American:
Kind of like Captain America with guns. The American has become the default leader of the team. He's probably the oldest (dating back to WWII), has experience in leading, and probably has good PR to boot. Gritty and realistic, the American knows how to make tough calls and own up to his responsibilities. Being an expendable clone, however, might make it difficult for him to connect with the rest of the team. The Mighty American will have to prove to his teammates that he has not lost his humanity in his deathless battle with evil.
~Kaufee 's Miss July:
Standing tall and proud right alongside the Mighty American, Miss July is yet another relic from WWII. Her patriotism, however, stands somewhat in contrast with the Americans. July comes off as much more optimistic and less jaded than her male counterpart. Her actions in the Freedom Wars also proves that Miss July knows not to confuse patriotism with fanaticism. With a solid moral compass and a more robust skill set, Miss July stands to be the most likely to inspire confidence in the public.
*ClockwerkSoul 's Tsunami:
Being the one only other woman as well as the only completely non-human member on Thunder Force, Tsunami is like a fish out of water in more ways than one. She still has much to learn about the surface world. Yet while others might see her situation as discouraging, Tsunami treats her new position as an eager opportunity. She is friendly as well as a team player and her positive spirit could easily make Tsunami the heart of the new Thunder Force team.
*Gaston25 's Thunderhead:
A classic superhero with a classic origin. Thunderhead is the real powerhouse of Thunder Force. He is practical, yet still has just enough of a sense of adventure to become a superhero. He has a reliable gut instinct but his impressive powers can make him overly confident. This is Thunderhead's first time in a superhero team and it may take some getting used to working with other people. Fortunately, Thunderhead is a smart man that is easy to get along with.
*mja42x 's Arrow-Kill:
Arrow-Kill is an accomplished soldier with a chip on his shoulder. Being the only member of Thunder Force without superhuman powers as well as being the least-known teammate gives Arrow everything to prove. His covert ops training makes him perfect for becoming the team's scout/spy and his connections in government agencies as well as the underground makes him a much more valuable resource than the rest of the team may realize. Arrow-Kill may very well accomplish everything about him he sets out to prove... assuming that his cocky attitude doesn't get him killed first.
~127thlegion 's Animal Boy:
Some people might find it redundant to have two animal-themed members in the same team, but Animal Boy's shape shifting powers just might make him more versatile than Wildman. He can use immense size to overwhelm an enemy or turn small enough to go places the rest of the team can't. Animal Boy is the youngest and also greenest member of the team, however, and still has a lot to learn from his elder teammates. The boy has had a to shoulder a lot of responsibility in his short years and there is every reason to trust his ability to cope with new and dangerous challenges.

So I saw this when you first posted it, immediately faved it, but never commented. Tis a shame, too, because this is quite an amazing piece. You did a great job on each character, and your descriptions are spot on. I'd like to add, I keep coming back to this picture. I see it a lot in the more like this tab, mostly because I'm looking at a lot of DU stuff and I add Thunder Force in my tags a lot, but I feel drawn to this piece like a moth to a lantern. It's a strange feeling, but what I'm trying to say really is that you did a spectacular job on this.

No problem.
Thank you for taking the time to really articulate your thoughts on this picture. I had no idea people would respond so much to this piece.

hey! this is awesome!
something i'm going to have to make clearer, though is that the mighty american is the LAST clone. in MAXIMUM DESTRUCTION, twin city was destroyed an, with it, the mighty american's cloning facility. so TMA has to make decisions based on the fact that he's no longer expendable. he will need to realize there are consequences to his actions and that he is all too mortal now.
but i do hope to touch on that in this month's (january) tale.

Excellent poses/positioning/ expression of the characters that reveal a little about each ones personality. I also enjoyed your descriptions. I can see that you are clearly more familiar with the whole Deviant Universe than I am. Great Job!!!
And one correction if I may. its MISS july similar to the way they label pinups in magazines or pageant girl. In her case, she was part of a USO calender given to soldiers in WWII, before she was kidnapped and gained her powers. THanks for including the pinup turned powerhouse, Miss July!

Bug-Off In reply to Kaufee [2013-01-04 21:42:40 +0000 UTC]
Fixed that minor detail in the description, no problem.
But there's really nothing miraculous about my familiarity with the characters. Before I submitted this picture, I made a point of researching each character first. I wanted to write informed descriptions of each character and it was important to me that I didn't get anything wrong about them (though I still took a few liberties, I'm sure).
Because they're all going to be on the same team now, I also felt it was important to speculate how well their powers and personalities would mesh together. All that will dictate what their roles will be in Thunder Force and help direct other artist when they draw them.

Bug-Off In reply to mja42x [2013-01-04 21:15:16 +0000 UTC]
It's really just a matter of studying each character and imagining how their powers and personality would contribute to the team dynamics when they actually tried to work together.
But yeah, I'm also a believer in "owning" the characters you draw. If the character isn't yours, you have to do your best to stay true to the spirit of that character as intended by the original artist. But you also have to adjust that character to play off your own strengths. You do that by emphasizing the characteristics that best assist you in telling the story the way you want.
...if that makes any sense.

In a way, yeah, lol. But even though I have a general idea where I'm going with the Deviant Universe, nothing is set in stone. I can change a stories direction at any moment. For instance, I didn't know I was going to disband the original Thunder Force until I began writing the Freedom War event.

The description is done now though, so you can see the rest of their profiles.
