Description Beginning sketch concept for a town map and associated buildings. This is an attempt to unify the numerous small sketches in some of my notebooks, many from as far back as 10 yrs or more. In this case I imagined a small railroad stop town in a fictional place, somewhat Anglo or American, and drew up a town center arranged favorably at a prominent rail stop and station, with taller townhouses and storefronts, and dozens of other cottage and estate homes scattered on smaller and larger lots, on meandering streets with pedestrian paths, alleys, pocket parks and other greenery, and sections of the town near the railroad reserved for light industry and warehousing.Β

Architecture is rather colorful, slightly whimsical and "cute," cottage-style, English vernacular, American storybook, Tudor, a bit of other influences. This is a good place to put a lot of my eccentric and complex home concepts that are not likely to be built "in reality" but are entertaining to look at!

This is also a test bed to check scale, look at density, relationship of buildings to each other, street size and purpose, lot size (small in town and larger as you get away from the center,) and many other factors crucial to developing a solid town plan.

SO I'm sure I'll be modifying, adding on to, changing, adding, subtracting, etc this particular file as I try to assign individual buildings to particular streets and locations. For now, here's a glimpse at the beautiful town of "Emerald Grove." Enjoy!

Yeah I went to Carmel/Pacific Grove/Monterey in a beat up Volkswagen around 1997 or so I think. Did some sketches of Victorian homes in Pacific Grove. Some of the first detailed sketches of old houses I ever did, along with stuff in Atlanta and Savannah. I visited Carmel briefly but did not draw/sketch there. Beautiful area of course. Big Sur coastline is stunning.

What is your average rates on blueprints assuming you're a legitimate architect?

That's too open-ended of a question! I would need specific info on a project before I quote a price range, for custom design service. Yes, I have been designing custom homes, design and all plans, for about 12 years now. I tend to be a good bit less expensive than architecture firms, however. I will say that.

HMMM yes pretty close, I'm certainly interested in English arts and crafts architecture, and those were designed as railroad-access suburbs I believe. This has rural surroundings though, Garden City suburbs were outside big cities. But same ideas and aesthetic.

Wow! This is brilliant! <3
I can imagine myself opening a bookstore or and art and craft store! The storefront are really cute and whimsical. Small town with busy streets yet familiar faces.Β
I also love the way you make everything unique but different from one another, make each one of them really unique and doesn't overlap over one another.
But what I love the most is the site plan/map thing you did. It must take quite a while to figure things out. Can't wait to see the floor plan of each building! (If you plan to make them)

Yeah there's more progress on the map but I haven't updated yet. Very complex to get the scale right, street width correct, density pattern right, all kinds of stuff to watch. Keep your eraser handy! Keep watching, this file will be replaced in future.

I would love to rent one of the smaller street cottages. They look lovely and not to big. Do they come with a garden?

What a wonderful concept, you really thought this through. What does surprise me, is that the larger estate homes are in the east. East is in most cities the least desired place (historically) due to the wind blowing the smokes of the fireplaces in that direction. But I don't know what kind of world you created, maybe the wind goes totally the other way .

Thank you for the lovely inspiration. Good luck with your town!

Built4ever In reply to Assink-art [2018-09-18 18:09:51 +0000 UTC]

Good catch! That's very interesting, the bit about wealthy people living on the opposite side of the smoke. I'll have to think that one through. For example, which direction is the prevailing wind in the American Northeast, vs American Southeast, vs. UK? Here, where I live in upstate South Carolina, you would want to be Southwest of any heavy industry. In the 1950's, in England, they were burning so much coal in the colder months that air quality was terrible and a lot of older people had lung problems and/or actually died. Victorian times in general had serious air quality issues everywhere.

And yes, cottages have gardens. Check elsewhere in my gallery for Scenic Overlook posted recently, you'll see very clearly the gardens behind some rural cottage style homes.

I first heard about it in a Tedtalk:

www.ted.com/talks/stephen_debe…

If the larger estate homes on are higher grounds it might be less of a problem? (just guessing here).

A garden, great! I looked at the Scenic Overlook, just beautiful! Yes... definately going for a cottage, preferably with a view on one of those beautiful castles! Β

HMMMM yes, after further thoughts and just thinking about "the East Side," I grew up in Detroit area where industry was mostly south, southwest of Downtown, BUT, the geography is unusual because the Detroit River is there, so it's rather more complicated. Directly East of the industry would actually be Windsor, Canada.Β

Another one: Manhattan is directly East of the New Jersey industrial/warehouse/port/refinery nightmare that we all see from jets and the highway. Some of the priciest real estate in the world.

I think the specific geography and the prevailing winds are different per location, so it's not really clearcut where the wealthy live. In Cleveland, most of the turn of the century wealth was concentrated East of downtown in the new rail-access suburbs. There was no way to be North, of course, the lake was the there. In St. Louis, the wealth went directly West. You could'n go East or you would cross states and cross the Mississippi.

I guess there must be multiple reasons for location. The history of a place has so much influence. Sometimes a river or railroad can cause a major division in a village or town.

When I moved to my current house I was surprised when villagers asked me on which side of the bridge I lived. I came from the other part of the county, I had no idea what they were talking about! The bridge (really small) was a longterm division in the village that kind of faded aways when two more bridges were build. But before that, familymembers wouldn't talk to each other when a member would move and live across the bridge. This weird situation was mindboggling to me at the time!

In U.S., an old saying was, "They live on the wrong side of the tracks," meaning the same thing, the railroad split the town in two, and typically, one side was less prosperous, working class, dirtier, etc and so generally, less desirable. From the 1950's onwards, neighborhoods were destroyed by the national highway system.

It must be immensely satisfying (nostalgic?) to see all of your begin to come work come together- a unifying vision of Emerald Grove in one place. It's like pieces of a puzzle. I'm sure hunting for all of the artwork was half the battle, haha! It's a really beautiful place. I'd love to live there, I'm excited to see the finished town map. Thanks for sharing your work!

Yeah but being a perfectionist, you endlessly modify things to get it all right and perfect. So yes, satisfying, but also puzzling to get the layout, street sizes, building types, all that stuff "right" on the town plan. I've already modified and added onto the main plan quite a bit. Thanks!
