Description
Continuing the evolution and design of the master plan for the fictitious Village of Emerald Grove, this is now hereby christened "McIntosh Street" (apples?), which you can find on the master map/plan, labeled as "Cottage Row" (for now.) The four pages of cottage-homes are exactly as you see them in my sketchbook-compilation. So the houses appear in order as you go down the street, with labeled lots (for now) which will be eventually changed to proper addresses (we'll see.) Map/ground plan was carefully drawn on one sheet of paper (8"x11" A4 size) with a very careful curvature, proper street width, two back alleys for access to carriage houses and other outbuildings, a scale, and the beginnings of some lot dimensions drawn in lightly. Scale is about 1/8" = 15 feet.Homes are all drawn in scale 1/16" = one foot, then I use micron black and brown ink pens with watercolor to bring them to life.Β

So great to see your village coming to life beyond just the houses. Can not wait to see when you have the whole village map done.

These homes would fit appropriately in an American urban residentialΒ setting in the early 20th century. These homes would be homes for the middle class in that time period.

Yes, early 20th century American Tudor/cottage etc is a major influence on my designs of course.

Not sure what the 'before' looked like, but it looks marvelous now.

Not much different really, this is just icing on the cake stuff. Getting all my "top" pieces up to snuff. This one was surprisingly popular. Also did a print page version (portrait format page) for a possible book. That's on my computer for now.

Left field.
Have you considered being a set illustrator for films? There's always the possibility they won't want storybook cottages, but then again, maybe they would?

Working as concept designer/set designer yes, I'm already on the verge of it really, with the last 3 months work (none of it able to be shown here...)

Is #1 based more on Jacobite town houses? My tenuous guess is based on a lack of half-timbering.

I kinda made it up I think. The other two next to it are definitely influenced by some pics of small English townhouses with really bold half-timbering.Β

As a designer, I am inspired by traditional styles and can't thank you enough for sharing this. The drawings are pretty neat as well.

Well, being in the UK, you're surrounded by lots of good stuff. The best is all around you, built over the centuries. The old builders were the masters. Just keep learning about the old secrets.
