Description
Beginning sketch concept for a town map and associated buildings. This is an attempt to unify the numerous small sketches in some of my notebooks, many from as far back as 10 yrs or more. In this case I imagined a small railroad stop town in a fictional place, somewhat Anglo or American, and drew up a town center arranged favorably at a prominent rail stop and station, with taller townhouses and storefronts, and dozens of other cottage and estate homes scattered on smaller and larger lots, on meandering streets with pedestrian paths, alleys, pocket parks and other greenery, and sections of the town near the railroad reserved for light industry and warehousing.ΒArchitecture is rather colorful, slightly whimsical and "cute," cottage-style, English vernacular, American storybook, Tudor, a bit of other influences. This is a good place to put a lot of my eccentric and complex home concepts that are not likely to be built "in reality" but are entertaining to look at!
This is also a test bed to check scale, look at density, relationship of buildings to each other, street size and purpose, lot size (small in town and larger as you get away from the center,) and many other factors crucial to developing a solid town plan.
SO I'm sure I'll be modifying, adding on to, changing, adding, subtracting, etc this particular file as I try to assign individual buildings to particular streets and locations. For now, here's a glimpse at the beautiful town of "Emerald Grove." Enjoy!

Yes, thanks, trying to unite a lot of stuff from sketchbook/binder. Background paper color helps to unify, for example, as well as color style and architecture.

1.) Is there a flat for rent in my budget?
2.) This is beautiful.
3.) Why does this remind me so much of a Professor Layton game?

"Professor Fran and the curious village"Β
I'll reserve you a flat in one of the rows of storefronts near the town hall, on the third floor. You can see some of the apple orchards from up there!
Just send me some bitcoin internet money for a deposit.

Ah, sorry, that was meant as an admiring banter-ish joke.
Though thanks for the opportunity, I probably would, if I had a credit card.
But Iβll only get a credit card after itβs too late.
Anyways, Iβd play that game to be honest.
And only run around just looking at the architecture, you draw really beautiful.
Just a little question though, is that actual scanned in paper, or was it done digitally?
(I donβt even want to prove read what I just wrote)

It's all scanned in, then I chop up and assemble digitally, and add a background light parchment. Each individual house sketch is maybe 2 inches (60mm?) across, and the map itself is about A4 size, or 8"x11".
And don't get a credit card. ALWAYS PAY CASH, MAN.

That is sounds thoroughly exhausting, but the end product is amazing!
Also, yes. Iβd rather go run and get apple gift cards then get a gift card, than have one electronic boy with me.
I mean, itβs so much easier to see if you still have enough money!
And it keeps me from spending it all on art supplies.
(No it doesnβt, but in theory it could)

Too bad you can't eat art supplies. Heck, maybe you can.

I mean, gouache, because of the chalk...probably not...but alcohol markers include...well alcohol and if it is normal Eythel alcohol, it has many calories, which could power you for a while...
Hmm.

I just ate a colored pencil. I'm gonna drive myself to the hospital. I'll be back later, I think.

Driving yourself to the hospital would be an amazing feed, considering the pressure youβd have to be under.

I like to draw when I drive.

That however seems like a dangerous feed, though not unaccomplishable.

Now that is a wonderful idea!Β It makes me wish I could do a virtual reality tour of your town when it is done.

Yeah that would be a super-complicated 3D model. I started putting together some of the "real-life" home designs to test that, putting together maybe up to 12 3D models of individual homes, gets super-complex right quick, would need to simplify somehow, get rid of interiors, etc.

I would have settled for street level drive-by.
I am surprise that none of the gaming companies haven't offered it as a side line product for architects given that games like Fallout 3 have players wandering down streets and through buildings.Β Maybe it would be worth an inquiry.Β

You mean what exactly? To help design games?

Gnoll-El In reply to Built4ever [2018-09-19 19:14:01 +0000 UTC]
Sorry about being unclear.Β I meant that gaming companies already have programs that let a person move through virtue reality streets of virtue reality town, so why couldn't one of those same companies make an app that would let an architect create a town of his own designs to show to clients?Β I don't know how big the market would be for the app, but the development of it doesn't seem to be that much.Β Β

Game vs. real floor plans could be quite different. I typically blur the distinction, with "buildable" structures with real dimensions and correct ceiling heights. But a lot of game environments are pretty much unbuildable.

(sigh) Β You have completely missed my point. Β It is not about game vs. real buildings, but using pre-existing programs vs. having to write all new lines of code. Β
