yep. that's what I was thinking
and in the more recent 3D platforms
you could have six fireballs going out from you from the spin
I've always kinda loved the idea of- instead of replacing the power up- fuse the power ups for an epic power up

I feel a little more hopeless about it... because realistically, it could be too overpowered. If I were the game designer, I would only incorporate this as a means to make a more dynamic gameplay with more difficult enemies that you almost will need the fusion of the power ups to knock them down. I think it could be possible in a game like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Madio Sunshine, where the game mechanics have been altered for a new kind of adventure.Β
Sorry about going off like that, I hope to be a game designer, so this is how I think about how to bring new elements to a vide game.Β

No, I wasn't gonna go that in-depth about it, but I did actually think of a more difficult game when I imagined something where powers could be combined. The gameplay itself is fine as it is so introducing new dynamics like that would upset the balance of Mario to enemies.Β
It's cool bro, I know people who went to school for it too, so it's not new to me

Yeah I'm just thinking of what would make it necessary to start combining powers.Β
well, I haven't gone to school... just something I've been studying and doing on my own and with my cousin since I was a kid

It really helps to do research on the many many different careers in the game industry. Once you figure out what you want to do, you have to also scope out the schools and the curriculum in order to find out if the material they teach will be pertinent to you. Because the technology is rapidly changing, it becomes really difficult for schools to teach it. By the time they can get books covering photoshop cs2 to print, cs6 is already out. You will be able to learn a lot of the design principles, sure, but what will really get you in the industry is a good set of skills and solid portfolio.Β
It really becomes something to weigh out. If by chance you decide you really want to join the industry, you have to be prepared to work extra hard. Most of this is energy going into learning and making a good portfolio. The only time I've seen that to not be the case is with programmers, and it really depends on how strong you are with different programming languages. Most game courses won't go in-depth with programming, and focus on design, so if that is your route, I suggest taking some computer science courses (which is difficult) but they will get you exposed to it.Β
Design, this one is always hard to get into, since everyone wants to be a superstar and design the game without having to do any of the actual production part. That never happens, and it is always the senior guys that understand the audience and have the experience to lead teams through successful projects. To be a designer eventually, you'd have to get your foot in the door and learn to work with people really well. In the meantime, you'd have to first become a successful member of the production team, designing user interfaces, texture artist, the list goes on. If you'd rather do Indie gaming, it's best to brush up on how other pros and people in the industry go through their process. If you don't know how to do things, you can't make a game. That's as simple as it gets.
Then there is concept artist. Tough trade, and requires a lot of man hours behind a pad and computer to get your skill up. If you're serious about this, study, study, study, draw, draw, draw, and basically never give up. If it gets to be too much for you, you might just not be cut out to do that. It's not easy having to grind out concepts in time limits, let alone dozens of good ones. If you're curious about more art stuff, look up Marc Brunet and Feng Zhu on youtube. They have lots of videos covering art.Β
The internet is a big place. It is of my opinion that you don't need the schooling to get into the industry, but everyone is geared differently. If you feel like having an instructor vs sitting and watching videos and doing self learning for hours is better for your learning, by all means. This is just some things I've learned and I thought might be of some use to you before you take the plunge. School ain't cheap, that's why I'm mentioning it.Β

I do a lot of concept art and character design with some skills at animation and a small knowledge of basic programming, but I focus on the story of a game and creating a world around that.
I think a decent example of that would be just my OC:
here's a drawing of him
and here's something that shows a little as to how I write a story outline:
Claus' Overall Story SummaryΒ Β Β Claus was born to a small Kokiri family. His parents were always concerned about their little wandering boy, who seemed to have a knack for ending up places he shouldn't. One day, his father found him outside the Lost Woods after being gone for three hours. His father, Josiah, scolded him badly for approaching the Lost Woods, surely having planned to explore it.
Β Β Β After that his parents began to be increasingly more restrictive and watchful of their son's activities. They had once lost a relative to those very woods and he was never seen again. There were dark rumors throughout the village, no one liked saying it, but everyone knew the stories... that those who entered and were inevitably lost in the woods become corrupted by the mysterious, unknown energy that courses through the woods and were ultimately transformed into what are known as skull kids.
Β Β Β The incident was left in the past and Claus began to grow up. Claus finished
Yeah, I agree that school has pros and cons. For me, I feel that learning by yourself is easier. In highschool, I alway clashed with my art teachers because I would always do what I wanted to do and sometimes it cost me my grade and a lot of the time I my art was showcased because it was above and beyond what anyone expected. Realistically, I hardly learned anything from taking art classes or graphic art classes, because almost everything I learned, I learned from trial and error- in traditional art, that meant drawing a million scribbles before I drew a stick figure and in digital art, that meant abusing the undo shortcut. I then use deviantart as a means to get feedback on my art that I might get as a grade in school (I wonder if there is a group based on a system like that). Honestly, I would like to skip school for the fact that it costs a lot and takes a lot of time.Β

If that is the case, I would definitely recommend using art forums to interact with other artists and get feedback. Deviantart is great and all for casual artists and social media, but in terms of professional critiquing, conceptart.org is the place to go

it is from the different artists I've seen work at it through their daily draws. If you are that consistent, with enough feedback you'll grow explosively in a short amount of time

Geezus fuck...just geezus fuck. Coincidentally enough, I've been playing Super Mario RPG, which kinda makes me wish the stars were colored after the Star Pieces, but who the hell am I to nitpick in the presence of the incredibly intense pieces whose powers level have gone beyond 9000 and across the Star Road and out of the Galaxy. Well f8cking done!

Thanks man! Incidentally, the thought of multi-colored stars crossed my mind while working on this piece, but the multiple colors might've been a bit much, so I opted for gold stars.Β

Fuck yeah man! This one is very close to the MK Megazord (which is the highest compliment to give hah). Have you tried putting a texture layer too?Β

Even I have to admit, that one's a doozy to topple haha. Thanks maker of dares! I would've considered doing textures, but I already did some postwork on it in photoshop and didn't want to go overboard with textures

HaphazardMachine In reply to bulletproofturtleman [2014-03-20 02:18:25 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, you're right there's a fine line on when to use textures. If there is too much it makes everything look like crap.Β
π: 0 β©: 1
bulletproofturtleman In reply to HaphazardMachine [2014-03-22 00:28:10 +0000 UTC]
Exactly. It just makes everything muddled and takes away all the hard effort from blending with a brush to achieve a texture
