Valhalla Volume 9: Den Store Udfordring/The Big Challenge
Back Cover
Previous: [link]
Next Volume: ???

valhalla belongs to peter masden, I am only translating it for the benefit of us english speaking folks~ Here's hoping an official translation comes out eventually!
original raw scans from data9724

And thus, volume 9 is complete! Translated the back cover too, just as a place to put my final thoughts on this project.
I love how book blurbs sometimes simplify so much that they're innacurate. Just reading this you'd assume Hrungnir started the fight and just attacked asgard for no reason.. he didn't even CHALLENGE Thor at all so the stupidity comment is a bit misplaced
Also it originally called Tjalfe a 'little manservant' but that sounds like an unfortunate innuendo in english.

Anyway, on to the BIG SUMMARY of The Big Challenge!
This has been a wild ride and a great accomplishment to complete my first ever translation project! I've learned loads of Danish and finally gotten to enjoy this volume, which was my intention in the first place. (It's torture to have a copy of the next story in one of your favourite series and not be able to read the text!)
However, I've got to say it's had its ups and downs. I found a lot of reasons to dislike this particular story and I don't think it'll ever be my favourite, even if it's nowhere near the worst in the series so far. I know you guys out there might disagree, as everyone has their own opinion on what makes a fun comic! But I did initially have my misgivings that this was a REALLY bad point to start translating, as this is a Tjalfe-focus volume and might give the wrong impression that Valhalla is completely childish. This was why I took a long break at the start after getting a tad sick of translating immature name-calling and such, I'm glad I managed to stick it out as it got better later. And I can't choose what I have to translate- if I missed this one out then Magni would appear from nowhere in later volumes! XD
I hope everyone enjoyed this as much as I did, and didn't un-enjoy it as much as I did!

The next volume Gifts For The Gods is back to a god-focused story (duh) and actually has Loki in it. He was the only one conspicuously missing from this volume- honestly he does that a lot whenever the plot could be solved too easily if he was there XD This volume will be a big rashomon-esque flashback sequence telling the story of how Mjollnir was created (actual myth) and how Thor fell in love with Sif (artistic license expanding on the setting).
After that we have a noir detective show-inspired story with Odin (yes, seriously) and that's the end of the volumes I am able to translate. (Though there are four more that I lack raw scans for.)

So...
Are you guys interested in me continuing with Valhalla 10: Gifts For The Gods?

Also, anyone interested in me doing a joke dump of 'outtake' comics for this volume? (Similar to the 'bad translation' page I did, but also stuff like memes and just silly dialogue I think would fit with certain panels.)

Thanks for the translation, I really enjoyed it! Did you learn Danish at some point, or did you teach yourself by translating the comics?

I, too, vote for continuing with the next volume!

Regarding the story, I would have liked a less child-centric story, too, but it was fine. In the film adaption, I thought at one point that they had overdone it (when they build that tree house in the woods).

You're welcome! It makes my day to see people still enjoying this!

Taught myself by translating the comics XD This is 90% basic lessons and dictionary referencing, I guess I have a bit of a talent for piecing stuff together with minimal knowledge XD I'm still far from fluent and can barely compose a sentence, yet I can read one XD (Probably shoulda started learning under better circumstances.. XD)

Sorry, but the project has been dropped cos someone else did the next few volumes and I don't have the resources to continue on from issue 12
I sent you the links in your note

I don't mind the child centricity, I just don't think it adds anything and it's a bit distracting. They shoulda had faith that youngsters would enjoy the series without a kid to relate to..
I remember the treehouse bit from the comic.. was it even more cheesy in the film? XD

Great job translating this. It's actually one of my favourite volumes and I personally liked Magni's development Just a shame he only appears briefly after this. He's actually one of my favourite characters, though that might be partly due to his design, which I think is really cool.
I hope one day these are all released in english so everyone can get to enjoy them

Thank you very much, it always makes me happy to see people still enjoying this old thing! (Especially Danish speakers, I love getting a fluent perspective to point out where I might have done stuff wrong. So I can improve for next time!)
I do rather have a soft spot for Magni too, he's a jerk but Thor is a bigger jerk in this volume and the stakes are pretty high for the guy. (Abandon your entire life and go live with the Aesir, then you have to be really strong and useful or you're kicked out.. which is hard since you left in the first place cos you're a runt... really, the jotunns and aesir are quite similar XD) I wish they'd done more with him in later volumes, but it was nice enough that he seemed to just settle into the family with no real drama after this point and no more dumb "I have to prove myself or dad will hate me" episodes. (My headcanon is that Thor started liking Magni for being Magni eventually so he'd never throw him out no matter how weak he is. Cos really he can't keep up that act forever! XD)
And yes, his design is one of the most spangly in a series where almost all the good guys just look like normal people in plain clothes. He's rather neat and exotic instead of being just ugly like most of the non-aesir.
I hope too that someday this translation will become irrelevant and I can have a shelf full of official english volumes that I can push in everyone's face for every second of every day. (I'd run around advertising like mad, seriously XD Everyone should check out this series and it's a crime it's easily available in so many countries except this one.)

Well, do you vote for me to continue translating the next volume then? We'll get there in the end. Oh and to slightly spoil, it's a mostly original story and more of a comedy than usual, revolving around beer. The punchline at the very end is SUPER GROSS but hilarious.
