Contest time + Summer in the city feature!I know all of you areΒ desperately looking for another challenge to take part in so today I'm going to tell you which two of them you should participate!
First one is a summer contest made by Dreamers-United, deadline: tomorrow! All you have to do is submit a picture about summer and write a journal about it. The prizes are very nice since the first place gets a three month core membership! (And the second place to.)

The second one is a contest made by :Still-life-stills: and as the groups name may suggest it's about still life - same topic here, "summer vibes" is the theme. The prices are as great as in the first contest, both places (first + second) will give you a 3month core membership and some points, if you win.Β

Stating the obvious, very lucky that you didn't need to discard this one thanks to the fall of the skirt. The graphic impact is terrific but for storytelling, I would have liked to see her face.

I get problems with the law..... as a lawyer.

To be clear, in Japan there is precedent for civil suits regarding the publishing of identifying photos that embarrass or defame individuals. Nothing is illegal about it, but people can take one to court. The suits are not huge, on the order of a few thousand dollars, but also I feel like they highlight the fact that some people do get harmed in some ways by having their face published in certain contexts. I publish photos of people's faces all the time, but I try to only do so when it comes to photos that I feel portray them in a generally positive light and do not make them the target of unwanted attention from strangers. I've definitely broken my own rule in a few instances where I felt the act of doing so had artistic merit.

It seems the Japanese legal system does follow a logic which similar laws in France and Germany do not with their absolute protections of privacy.Β In the example you provide if the person shown were to sue I expect a good defense for the photographer would be exactly what the picture shows: a man passed out drunk in public in plain view who has already embarrassed himself.Β While artistic merit might be a good philosophy for the photographer, the fact that he already engaged on his own in his own public humiliation which the photo does nothing to exaggerate would be a better argument.
