I recently had the chance to visit a sumo stable, or 相撲部屋. It in particular this is Takanohana stable, 貴乃花部屋, in Nakano-shinbashi just outside of Shinjuku. The sparring session was very intense and the wrestlers were going full bore.Related content

Just revisiting this shot again, I have to say the colors are awesome. Especially the browns are spot on. When I stayed in Ryokoku I took a walk to several stables. Unfortunately you cannot just walk into one, but some wrestlers are always training outside. I wish I can see a scene like in the photo at some point.

Yeah, my girlfriend knows one of the guys in this photo so she could invite me one morning. I was asked not to take many photos photos so I only took about 10.

It captures the raw gritty nature of the sport. There is something so pure about this scene. No flashing lights, no screaming crowds( assuming they do that at a sumo match) no money or trophy on the line. Just to big dudes testing their strength to see who is better, while another challenger awaits his turn.

That is correct. One the sumo wrestlers is a friend of a friend, so we could sit in for an about an hour. It was a privilege!

I would like to see this too. Many years ago we had a short TV series about life in a Sumo stable. There was an awful lot more to it than people would imagine.

yeh it's amazing. on one hand it's just unique how you compose the images and how you tell the stories. and then there's this visual style in your processing/editing that's extremely interesting and special. also the way the are lit is extraordinary. when I see the thumbnail I know it's your photo.
