Description
On one trip to Fukuoka City we attended one of the major Sumo tournaments. This was actually the last one where the famous Sumo wrester Akebono competed before he retired. Taken in 2003. I have to say, these guys may weigh hundreds of pounds, but they are in fantastic shape, ironic as that may seem. They are powerful and shockingly fast; I would NOT want to be in the way of these wrestlers.Related content

Great shot! I'd like to get to watch a sumo match someday--the closest I've ever come is watching the two minutes' worth of sumo shown in the movies Ocean's Thirteen or You Only Live Twice (007)...

Oriental culture is so interesting
As anyone else, I love variety and even though Europe has many different cultures and languages in a small area, it seems nothing beats Martial Arts for me.
Gotta blame Kung Fu Panda for that

I *love* Sumo. It needs to be on tv more over here. Best wrestling sport ever.

It really is, I actually love how ritualistic it is, it's as much spiritual rite as sport, which makes it really interesting to watch I'll take giant men in loincloths trying to push each other out of a ring over WWF any day!

Me too! My favourite part is when the two guys get down and stare each other out. Watching the ref in his traditional kimono and fan and his chants is fun too.

Heh, US WWF (and others) got NOTHING on these guys.
Hey, Fukuoka! CSU Northridge has something akin to an exchange program (sort of) with Fukuoka Women's U! My Japanese professor mentions it a lot, and this semester we have several students from there.

WWF psssh. One Sumo guy could take on five of those guys and win. Easily.
Fukuoka's a neat place, we went there fairly often (10 dollar bus from Saga City was only 50 minutes). Home of Costco, shopping and general awesomeness! If you get a chance to go, do! Lots to see and do ^_^
