I just saw this when searching dA for most popular street ! Is this a spur of the moment kind of shot, or an intentional 'i want to get a person in focus with train blurred in background' and then spending a few hours waiting for that? Or can that still be an aim for a shot in the back of your mind and then the opportunity presented itself? Love the blurred man wearing the mask staring right out, the umbrella piercing through the edge of the door.

This was a case of shooting many similar photos and already having the concept well ingrained. Then on this day I was on my way somewhere and saw this lady in a purple kimono. It was a perfect contrast with the yellow Sobu line. So, I did a quick 180 as I passed her and waited for 2-3 minutes for the train to come. Getting the timing right was a matter of taking a few shots and then choosing the best one. That's it. So it was a combination of preparation and opportunity. This is called 'luck' by most people.

Yeah with 'luck' there's 'making your own luck', and with street stuff relying so much on people as subjects i can have the desire to go out and do more, and circumstances allow it, in terms of living 40 minutes from a city centre, but i'd call all my output luck really. 99% light and luck.
I asked because i think others strengths and my weakness is not identifying a possible shot and waiting for a subject. Looking through loads of photos months ago, i think; why didn't i stay on that wall. I walked right past and didn't value it and it was rich with detail. Or i zoom in on a dog rather than just think; why not centre it and have the right angle corner surrounding it. I don't think logically. I think it's maybe the way i edit, the need to focus on the subject above all else or it won't work. So many zoomed out shots of people walking i get are just nothing. And move, why take a burst stood still, why not move and cover more angles.
i just watched a video of Bruce Gilden in Derby in England which is quite amusing, and did think..yeah he's right, a flower in hair? You can't ignore that.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejlIgyβ¦
but what i found most encouraging is his self criticism, self doubt, awareness of the difficulty of doing street, his need to constantly self analyse, it was kind of comforting. Although his assessment anyone only gets 20 good photos over 40 years is a bit depressing ..! His way of thinking being a photo is merely 'good', or 'total crap'. I usually only go out on certain photograph days, and not even for that long. Maybe 1pm to 9pm, mostly. I spend too long eating breakfast and watching football focus on a Saturday morning, but realise leaving later than I ought to in terms of deciding how committed i even am to doing this doesn't mean anything if i then see something i wouldn't have had i left earlier. If that's not worded so badly it doesn't make sense.
wait this is an overload of words on your photo isn't it. it can't be deleted can it. unless it can be hidden.

I watched that video. I love how Bruce Gilden works. I can't bring myself to work the same way, though also I don't really want to recreate his style. But the way he does things is very cool. I think when he says 20 good photos, he means truly good. Like, timeless classic images good. I'd be extatic to have 20 good, consistent images over 40 years....

I love the "tradition' feel of the woman, to modern life passing her by.
Wonderful capture.

Yeah that's what initially made my do a u-turn and come back for this shot. It's not uncommon to see women wearing kimono in Tokyo. But once I realized that it's purple and she's standing at the Chuo-sobu line (yellow stripes) then I had to come back and wait for a train to pass. Luckily no one else came to wait for the train behind her and block the shot.

That's some awesome serendipity right there. Then again, i assume your knowledge of the city helps that serendipity along. Plus good observation skills

I'd say so! I'm not the first to say this, but street photography is more about looking and noticing than anything else.

I love the allegory in this. Time moves, while tradition stands still.

Ah yeah, that's a great way to look at it! I wish I had thought of that myself (maybe I did subconsciously)
