Description
I needed an illustration that showed the moment in the MASK series when Miles Mayhem tricked Matt Trakker into thinking that VENOM had ended their evil ways. I thought it would be ideal to see that moment from a low angle, with the sun behind the characters; making for a striking image. NATHAN BAERTSCH once again illustrated a piece the likes of which the MASK series had never ever seen! As this was for the News from the Eighties section of the magazine I had to create a newsprint-like overlay.Related content

Wow, great job on the newsprint overlay! I for one really liked the new direction the second series took and think it's a shame there were only 10 episodes like this. I also often wonder what a season based on the Split Seconds line would have looked like...

I love this piece but it also shows just when the series Jumped the Shark. The Third Season "Racing Episodes" were so bad and they just ruined the entire concept of the series and tanked it.
It went from an elite anti-terrorist group with secret identities fighting an infamous terrorist network to every one knows everybody, forget Mayhem killed Trakker's family and we can all race for charity and have fun. It went from bad ass to Hannah Barbara Wacky Races.

I always wanted to learn more than anything WHY everything had changed...but it was a question that remained unanswered - I asked the writer of season two, and he had no idea why the changes had be implemented...

From what I have heard from my friend who knows a former writer on the show was Kenner put immense pressure on the cartoon creators to promote the newer vehicles from the "Racing Series" toyline that was coming out.
For some reason instead of doing it for a few episodes here and there like most of the other toy based cartoons of the time someonme decided a total revamp was in order did and made it all about that new assortment of figures and vehicles for a hard sell of sorts.
I've asked her to ask this writer why such a drastic change was made and who was ultimately responsible for wrecking the show and all he said to her was it wasn't him and he wasn't sure who it was that made the final decision.
I think nobody wants to take credit for destroying a beloved cartoon that was super popular at the time so we may never know.
It's sort of the same with the USA rights to the cartoon itself. Nobody is really sure who owns them and it's mired in so much red tape that it seems unlikely they show will ever be released on DVD here. I myself had to send for the Austrailan DVD box set just to get all the cartoons again.

Love it! Though I can't believe M.A.S.K fell for it.
