I can get why the doctor or the shopkeepers might not have time to go traipsing around the mountain for herbs or bugs, but Mako's requests are especially odd. He always wants failed dishes for fertilizer or flowers and herbs despite the fact that he goes exploring in the mountains for plants almost every night.
But...I adore Mako, so I always try and complete his requests. I wish I could marry him in this game ;.;
...would a failed dish even make good fertilizer?

I'd say there's still SOME good nutrients left in the failed dish somewhere. There is a rumour that burnt toast is better for you (can't remember why though) so maybe the same logic applies to this?
Can't understand why Mako wasn't a bachelor. I can't wait to get the orchard expansion and the drink maker. I'll be plying him with booze in no time!! (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧

I've never heard that about toast. I guess if it were true, it might explain why he wants the failed dishes.

Hmm... depends on what you need, and how badly you screwed things up. Burnt food would make a good source for raw carbon, but I'd assume that the vast bulk of it would be going towards compost.

Hm...the game actually calls it a "failed dish". The sprite for it looks burned, but I suppose it could simply be similar to the weird dishes you could make in Magical Melody.

There's a character from Rune Factory 3 who absolutely adores failed dishes as gifts. And that game goes the extra mile of possibly producing "Super Fails"...
