Description
Every now and then, I am haunted by a single phrase. At the most random times and for no reason, it will invade my brain. "Ne ne papa" *war flashbacks*I don't think any of the phases I've gone through were as weird as my high school Hetalia phase. The weirdness already starts at the beginning, where I remember when I got into Hetalia. But the thing is. I don't know how... I mean it was more or less of a combination of things. A friend from Chinese school, encouraged and fueled it when I was just discovering it, but I don't know what exactly got me into it. I don't remember coming across it out of curiosity or being told to watch it. It just.... happened. Sit down gather 'roun while I talk about... err whatever this time in my life was
For those who don't know what I'm talking about, Hetalia is an an anime/manga series about personified countries that get into weird, wild, funny, situations while simultaneously trhing to teach history. The main character being Italy. A sorta cowardly but loveable kinda guy who only really wants to eat pasta and flirt. His best friend is Germany, the tough serious man, and his other friend Japan, a serious, but also akward person who's generally very polite. Oh yeah if you're noticing a pattern here, there's a reason. Much of the series is set during world war 2, and yeah... they are the Axis Powers. I mean the first season is literally called Axis Powers Hetalia (APH for short). There's also the Allies characters of America, England, France, Russia, China, and a Canada. (although Canada doesn't play much during the Allies moments except unintentionally being a ghost and freaking the others out in one scene) Now you may be thinking. "Why in the flying french fries, is there an anime revolving around the bad guys of WW2". Well, it's not solely about WW2, and they rarely ever mention or reference fascism or nazism in the series, other than a few of the edgier jokes (in the english dub), or the uniforms worn. There is nothing what so ever that glorifies the ideologies, goals, and actions taken by the axis countries. Also the anime isn't really one that's serious in general, it mostly exists to poke fun of national stereotypes, like America being loud and loving burgers. My explanation is probably really bad, but.. eh.
Like I said earlier, I don't at all remember how I discovered or got into Hetalia, other than a friend being excited and fueling my interest in it after discovering it. And boy when I got into it. I REALLY GOT INTO IT. If there's one thing I would never shut up about from spring 2012 to the end of high school, it was Hetalia. Every time I met someone new I'd greet them with "Do you know what Hetalia is?". Every single person... I said this to. Just imagine being all like
"Hi my name is (insert your name) nice to meet you!"
"Do you know what Hetalia is!"
"Wha-"
"Do you?"
"N-no?"
"....N E N E P A P A"
It actually got so bad to the point someone I turned someone off from it really hard. This friend wasn't into it in the first place, but after listening to me talk about it, sing the songs, quote the characters... etc. It made them really hate it. I regret having done that but I was just way too into it, and too obnoxious at the time to realize how annoying I was being.
Out of the cast if personified countries, my favourite has to be America, followed closesly by Japan China and Canada by a 3 way tie for 2nd fav. America being my favourite was probably because I saw a lot of my in him at the time I saw him for the first time. These days, not so much. I also really loved his character versions of the main song(s) and his personal character songs. Also I really really love hamburgers too. FUNFACT! The cowlick my art self has is based off one APH America has. I liked Japan mainly for his voice and for having a similar hair style I had. China was my birth country, Canada is my home country, so they automatically are the favs basket.
I have met a lot of my current online friends through Hetalia. We don't talk about it as much as we did before, but every now and then one of us will send a related meme or cursed image. There was one friend I made at a convention back in 2013 who was cosplaying as Italy. I wish I had given her a heads up before I deleted my previous dA account in 2019, since that was the only form of media I could used to communicate with her. I don't think I ever got their name but hey, if you cosplayed Italy at a 2013 anime convention at University of British Columbia in Vancoiver Canada and met a Japan cosplayer, that was likely me! What's up! Oh yes, I have a cosplay for Japan. Just the outfit and pants my mom bought online, and gifted me for Christmas in 2012. Unfortunately I can no longer fit in it. Not that I've grown out of it, it's more like I expanded out of it. It wasn't that long until I ripped a hole the pants while using the cosplay as a prop for a high school video project. I also lost one of the buttons, since the strings that held them onto the jacket were really thin. I'm happy I was able to wear a few times to a few cons before it started falling apart. Speaking if cosplay, I once saw Canada cosplayer at a Canada Day event at Canada Place in Vancouver. I don't remember what year that was, but that person was awesome!
I think one of the main reasons I really liked and still like Hetalia is because I've always had an interest in things relating to countries, whether it be geography, culture, politics(international relations wise), and most importantly F O O D. Being in the Hetalia fandom also led into discovering Polandball, Scandinavia and the World, and Countryhumans (which is kind of just a spin off of Polandball except with human bodies and facial features)
If there were some things I would have to complain about Hetalia is probably some of the portrayals of certain countries. I'm not exactly a fan of some of the way South Korea was protrayed in the manga, which understandably has upset the the South Korean government. I like the America like personality but the way he touches Japan sometimes makes me uncomfortable. There's also parts of the fandom that have taken things too far in terms of cosplaying. Some cosplayers have cosplayed Germany and incorporating nazi imagery, which is really unnecessary. I get that people may want to be more accurate to history, or be detailed in their cosplays, but you should never use nazi imagery in a cosplay. If a character wears such imagery normally, then how about, you don't cosplay that character at all? Again Germany does not wear nazi imagery in the anime or manga, so cosplays can and should be done without it.
I really don't have that much to say about it other than, Inwas super into it for a good few years. The whole reason I made this was because I have fallen back into the fandom again recently. Also excited for a new season being released this year, after a 5+ years wait after the previous season was released. I'm not as into it as I was, but I still love to watch clips, episodes and listen to the songs.
