Description This is a sample guide for all the Filter Effects available in Inkscape 0.47. A Filter Effect is an overlay on top of a vector object that visually modifies it to take on the qualities of a raster-based image. This allows for the rendering of complex shapes and textures that would normally be impossible/impractical to recreate using only vector paths, strokes and blurring effects. Since these are only overlays, Filter Effects can be enabled, disabled and modified by the user at any time.

Filter Effects have been around since 0.46, but the latest version integrates them better so that they are easy to access and use via the Filters menu option.

hehe, actually I'm Mexican, but my partner is Indonesian and she's gotten me quite fascinated with the culture. So that's why I make sure my favorite FOSS programs are represented thusly.

My short time with OpenOffice.org 2 years ago actually reminds me of the painfully slow implementation time you mentioned affected GIMP too -- which is not surprising given their mutual development models seem paradoxically-closed.

Just off the top of my head, fearing accidental deletions of brushes is silly, since most "normal" programs have a "Restore Defaults" option that could easily reinstate the brushes that came with the program (and lest we not forget just your typical message box saying "Are you SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURE you want to delete this brush?! You ain't getting it back, you know!"

Hard disk space thing is also crazy, unless they want to try to sell the idea of running GIMP on an ARM-based smartphone, in which case space considerations would definitely be a plus in most cases. But if they're not forward-thinking with simple Single-Window modes, I won't held my breath for a GIMP Mobile.

And it's amazing how much our paths parallel each other indeed.
Can we say then that Inkscape is the great Uniter and purveyor of all things good with FLOSS? ^^
Probably,... but at the same time it's a bit of a pity that it's only that for artists (and vector-graphics artists at that) which doesn't really amount to a rounding error as far as potential software usage. GIMP and OpenOffice, which are representative a far greater audience, haven't really set the best examples, IMHO. >.>

What an interesting background!

Heh, Open Office did start off as a closed-sourced project. It goes to show how badly many of them are managed. And I Still don't understand why they don't have a more direct way of "paste unformatted." I "paste unformatted" more often than I want to paste formatted text. When I'm copying some text off the web, I Don't want it to look all formatted and flowery. Why do I have to go through an intermediary "Paste special" step?

As for Gimp and disk space, apparently it had to do with multi-users and file duplication, or something. I didn't 100% get it, but they must be talking about people using seriously outdated hardware if brushes take up too much disk space, even when multiple users are concerned.

And yes, I wouldn't hold my breath for Gimp Mobile either.

Yes, it's a pity that Inkscape is for a relatively niche audience. Sure, it's hugely useful to a variety of designers (including icon and website designers), but that's still a drop in the ocean compared to the number of people who need to write text or edit their photos. Still, it's nice to find an open source software that does so well.

You're welcome, although I still need to update this for 0.48 (if there have been additional filters introduced).

Thanks for this summary, I am currently looking to free up some time and do something similar with a more complex object.
Great example of the power of Inkscape.

Thank you, and for sure if you can derive this guide using more complex objects that would be even better. I know for a fact that some of these effects don't translate well to a simple duo-tone sphere. ^__~

This is a very good reference. Thanks for your work.

You should share this on the Inkscape FLOSS Manual: [link]

And I would also suggest to ship your .svg file with Inkscape, in the shipped toturials or examples. Feel free to drop a mail on the dev mailing list.

This would be a great way to contribute to Inkscape.

Well I suppose I wouldn't mind setting up a section for this on FLOSS manuals.

But I'm already burnt out with development mailing lists (especially after KDE), so I doubt I'll do that. Could use a volunteer/liaison to handle that for me, though.

*stares at Pannini*

No problem! ^^
Its actually come in pretty handy for me at times. ^___^

I reckon I might try to do a similar guide but for Renpy commands, since I've worked so much with that lately (it's something of the new Inkscape for me, lol). ^^

I have been messing with Inkscape for quite a while and I use it as my preferred tool wherever possible. I like the filter effects implementation in version 0.47, as it makes the effect also available to less technical users. Your guide helps to explain and promote Inkscape options further. Very cool guide!

Awesome blossom, so glad this guide has been useful to you while you play a little with Inkscape. It is indeed a wonderful iittle program... roughtly 99% of my 2D artwork is drawn in it. ^^b

Can't believe it O_O
This is crazy awesome, this should be implemented inside the software, with small icons in the menu.
Thank you so much !

C-quel In reply to tibalfr [2009-11-22 02:44:47 +0000 UTC]

fufu, mayhap I should bring this up to the Inkscape devs. Even if they can't be placed in the menu, at least they might be interested in adding it as part of the Help field tutorials. ^^

tibalfr In reply to C-quel [2009-11-22 13:17:07 +0000 UTC]

You're right, the icons would be too small, but the filter example could be displayed on the side, on rollover. As if there was a submenu for the filter item, but just with an inactive image (or more).
For now I just printed it >^^< It's so usefull although I have a hard time finding the french equivalent of the filter names.

C-quel In reply to tibalfr [2009-11-23 05:43:14 +0000 UTC]

fufu, I see. Kinda like how the Text Tool mini preview works, almost. ^^

Granted, it might not be as easy to add from a programatic standpoint (unless they can get more devs). Plus between that and a head-start on SVG animation for the 0.48 release, I'd rather choose animation. I want to animate STUFF!! >v<

[but since I can't do it in Inkscape yet, I'm learning to do it in Blender]

Its a vector tool like Adobe Illustrator or some parts of SAI, but its free and open source so you can use it whenever and however you want... FOREVER! ^v^

Feel free to download and give it a try if you want... ^___^

fufu, yes long before I knew Inkscape I thought only Flash, Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand (and a little bit of Photoshop) did vector graphics. All of them were very difficult to use for me, so i was put off learning it for a long time.... ^^'

Then the day came enough was enough and that I HAD to learn vectors (because I just couldn't draw Anime by hand well). Tried Illustrator again, hated it, went off to look for something else. That's where I discovered it, thought it was easy, loved that it was free yet still so feature-rich, used it more and more and more....

And well, 3 years later, I use it almost 100% and still love it very much.... ^___^b

Brilliant Work Art, I was so much hoping that someone would do something like this.

Pravo, and I think inkscape is shaping up to be a very strong image creation tool in all sorts of areas.

"Pravo", lol. ^____^

Yes some of the latest additions are positively outstanding, albeit subtle. Can't wait to finish the guide, although be warned it will be HUGE (might actually need to do this as 2 or 3 pages.

That says a lot about the kind of features that have been in development for a while.
