Description A quick test of Synfig Studio's recolouring abilities, featuring Star Sparkle (aka, Twilight's mum).

[note: I do prefer the name "Twilight" because of the G1 thing, but use Star Sparkle to avoid confusion] ^^'

I do miss my SHIFT+CTRL+V shortcut in Inkscape, but other than that the colouring options in Synfig are fairly serviceable -- the ability to use the Bucket Fill to quickly recolour both Fills and Outlines works rather well. The colour picker itself could use some work, though... that, or I just got too used to the colour triangle from Inkscape. ^^

Recolouring itself was done quickly, but had to spend an extra 1.5 hours on her since I quickly realized that Star Sparkle wasn't simply a recoloured version of her daughter. Confound these ponies and their individual details! XD

I also used the opportunity to get rid of unnecessary vertices, and improve the way the eye and its blinking works... now that her eyelid is literally "sewn" to her eyelash, changing her eye shape is now easier than ever. I definitely encourage tinkerers to play with the source and check out my amateur handiwork.

This should be my last pony for a little while... next up is Octavia, and for her we're going to try out something new. ^__^

I've been testing out synfig with your twilight sparkle file. It's harder than expected XD I'm trying to modify stuff all over the place XD. But it's a lot of fun! I am hoping to be able to post the result of my experiments soon!

That's GREAT news! Synfig is an open source project with [so far] little backing, so they really haven't had much chance to give its interface a good deal of polish. But it is pretty powerful, though [and legitimately free too].

Twily was my first Synfig test, and as such I did stuff very inefficiently. No doubt as you master the program, you'll do WAY better than I ever could. ^__^

Check the creative commons license, you can use it for just about anything short of making money off of it (the last part isnt my rule, just dont want no trouble with Hasbro...)

My recommendation is that you work directly with the source file so you can control the size and format that you need for your boot screen. You're not stuck with just this GIF file.

Also, so glad Twilight's mom has at least one fan....

And actually Mom didn't take very long at all to do... probably a little over an hour only because I had to change her mane, eyes and cutie mark, and it didn't help that I'm a silly perfectionist. >v<

Most of the grunt work (the walking animation) was already done with Twilight Sparkle, so reusing the vectors for Mom was easy. ^__^

so how long did Twilight take to animate? the reason why im asking is that im trying to get into the animation game myself and im trying to get some info on the subject

Hmmm... well i am kind of a perfectionist, so even though I only had to draw Twi once, and then reposition her for four more frames (this makes more sense in the source file), I fretted and fussed for about four to five hours worth. Perhaps its not a fair comparison since Im new at this and spent half my time looking at the online manual, but still you can imagine its probably going to take a while at first.

Once you get your rhythm going, it wont be as bad. ^_^
