Description The first in my series of "ITSATRAP" fanart images, this installment features my favorite characters in one of my favorite Anime series of all times: Lovely Complex . While not exactly the likeliest boy-girl pairing in the series, I've always wanted to see Risa Koizumi and Seiko Kotobuki interact a little more often. Given the lack of such images, I figured I'd follow the age-old adage: "if you want something done right, just do it yourself". ^______^

Being my first TRUE Anime fanart since as far back as the Canalfriend Era, I was initially quite anxious to see how well I could style-match the original Love★Com cel art. That process was slow and lumbering, and while I did eventually succeed I was neither comfortable nor impressed by the results. So I removed the limiter and just drew them with as much "C-quelism"'s as I could afford given the impending biweekly deadline.

Ironically, I think the results are a lot closer to the Love★Com style than the original imitation work, and I had thrice as much fun drawing it! ^___^

Not much else to say about the characters -- fans of the series will surely know them inside out. The one bit of improvisation done was on Seiko-chan's height. Only Risa and Ootani had any listed heights, so I used Ootani's 156cm frame as a template for a highly logical assumption....

Despite his short stature, he's WAY bigger than Risa's friend Nobuko-chan, who in turn is WAY bigger than Seiko-chan; ergo, 144cm.... Makes perfect sense, right? ^____^'

*ducks at the sight of rocks and food items being tossed at him*

Admittedly, some artistic license is in effect, but hopefully it will make the image as enjoyable to view as it was for me to draw. ^v^

I wasn't THAT suprised when Seiko revealed her secret. After playing Cat Girl Alliance, things like this not really makes my feelings change. I still consider her as a girl.

P.S.: I'm not gay, I learnt to understand transgendered ಠ_ಠ

C-quel In reply to The-Syreth-Clan [2010-12-20 04:56:10 +0000 UTC]

haha, was kind of a surprise for me though, since Seiko-chan isn't exactly the height and mass of your average transgender. But guess that makes her/him all the more lovable.

[the same applies to Mariya from Maria+Holic, with the exception that he's a sadist]

Thank you very much. ^___^

Indeed, I wasn't expecting Seiko-chan's secret -- I thought it was just the typical scenario where a short guy gets to meet an even SHORTER girl, and jeopardizes the love interest of the taller girl. ^^'

Luckily, it was far from it.

Plus I do kinda like gender-bending like that, which is why I drew this picture. When I ask people who haven't seen the series whether they know which one in the picture is the guy, they almost always pick Risa due to her much larger size and masculine clothes/shoes.

Another funny gender-bending series like this is Maria+Holic, in case you want to see another Seiko-type (although a bit sadistic, lol). ^____^;

lol, well when I was 14 I did know a few boys that were definitely stunted-short (and usually acted like little hell-raisers to compensate, I guess), so I know it's possible. ^^

Still, in all fairness I only guesstimated Seiko-chan's height, based on the fact that Otani (156cm) is a bit taller than Ishihara-san, who in turn is a bit taller than Seiko-chan.

lol, well Seiko-chan doesn't give much love in the series as it is, let alone among some fanartists. ^^

I don't think I got the height right, though, but I reckon my guesstimate is more fun.

Currently watching Maria+Holic, which is based exclusively on the premise of a very tall and humorous girl paired with a very short but cute (albeit sadistic) cross-dresser. Certainly worth a watch if you liked Love★Com.

Nice picture. For some reason, those two look adorable together.
But, is it just me, or could be that, they're as good together, because both of them are cute with Atsushi-kun, just as much. Well, I hope you understand, what I mean.

Anyway, I'm working on making a story, that I'm going to put up on FanFiction.net/, that works like an unofficial spin-off of Lovely*Complex.
It will feature Seishiro-kun/Seiko-chan as the protagonist, and also the sole one of the main characters, that's actually from Lovely*Complex.
It's going to be called "Mahou Bishoujonen SacreSainte", there Seiko is a so called "magical pretty girlboy".
Wish me good luck, with making my story.

Hi! Sorry it took a while to get to this -- I've been busy with translation work. ^___^

Thank you for your feedback. It's a shame Seiko-chan was squandered in the series -- I loved it when he interacted with Risa-chan especially. ^^

And you're right, although given the underlying theme of the series, the very huge and unconventional size-disparity also heightens the cuteness of the pairing IMHO. ^^

And yes, good luck creating and finishing your story. Do please drop me a note when you're done, as I'd love to read how it goes with young Seiko-chan. Unlike Mizuho from Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru, Seiko-chan seems to have virtually no problem blending in with girls.

I just realized after reading your latest comment that I hadn't commented or fav'd this, which is a terrible injustice!

This pictures is absolutely gorgeous, the shading you used on the characters' hair, skin, and clothes just seems to scream with beauty. One thing I noticed that stood out especially to me was their body proportions. You've managed to portray their characters most excellently here, Risa definitely has the frame of a rather tall girl, rather than a normal girl simply 'blown up', and Seiko seems to have the perfect build for someone of her stature.

I've only read part of the Lovely Complex manga, but I think you've inspired me to sit down and watch the series (once I get a computer with enough free space to download it. )

Again, fantastic work, and I'm sorry it took me so long to comment.

C-quel In reply to chibiBiscuit [2009-03-01 06:05:40 +0000 UTC]

Fufu... well, like I told Takai-san, I do feel more comfortable getting intermittent comments only. If it were more frequent, then I'd worry I'd be distracting from school or work or drawing or,... mashing delicious stuff. ^.^

Even so, thank you very much for stopping by and for the comments. As with Inkscape, I gave this picture my all as a means of promoting this excellent Anime series. ^__^

And that was quite a feat too, since I generally try to avoid fanart like the plague (original characters, "ftw" as they would say). ^^'

Interestingly-enough, I did have to intervene a little with the body portions, since the original Anime artwork not only had a habit of changing heights and body portions every 20 seconds, but it also relied almost primarily on what I call "stilt-like" character designs. Meaning that legs and arms were way too thin and gangly for my tastes, so I beefed them up a touch,... especially on Risa-san.

Wish I could've added a few more centimeters, though... I'm not one to call a 172cm girl "tall" so much as just "above normal". The series, on the other hand, has a habit of depicting her as this big hulking giantess regardless. ^__^;

If you ever have the treat of watching the Anime series (or at least the first 5 episodes or so), feel free to stop by again so we can chat a bit about Seiko-chan's character, who [admittedly through a very unorthodox way] embodies a lot of what we talked about regarding proportional height AND mass ratios. ^^'

Damnit. Firefox just crashed, and I lost my comment. I was almost done too. >_> I blame the AVG Antivirus. I need it to get it's filthy hands away from my precious browser.

Okay, allow me to try this a second time!

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond to you, this week's been hectic.

I agree with your philosophy concerning fanart. I find it much more rewarding to draw our characters, and the characters of my friends. I just don't see much of a point of creating art for a character that has already reached such a high level of notoriety that they're included in an animated feature.

And you've just touched on one of my biggest anime peeves. (It's not the biggest though. That title is reserved exclusively for Bones tendency to steal the plot twist from the end of Planet of the Apes, and somehow relate their beautiful fantasy world back to boring old earth. Sometimes, I like fantasy to stay fantasy. ^_^ )

Anyhow- A lot of animes, to save on production values, focus 95% of the time on only showing characters from the waist up; which would be fine of course, if the artists paid any attention to the characters' scale in relation to each other. More often than not, in these situations, the characters bob up and down like they're stick puppets. If there's any difference in height between any of the individuals, it fluctuates like crazy between scenes. XD

I kind of agree with you though- 172cm just strikes me as average, and while I'm sure it's slightly more noticeable in a culture where it's people are slightly shorter than those of other backgrounds, it hardly seemed enough to warrant the amount of reactions she received regarding her height. Maybe you could carry on a little bit, I mean, who's to say she doesn't have another growth spurt or two in her?

I've honestly considered creating a Shoujo-esque manga where the main character encounters a girl of significant stature on his first day at a new school, and they soon become friends. Of course, I'm torn- part of me would like to take it in a more publicly accessible direction, such as they did with Lovely Complex. On the other hand though, I would love to illustrate that despite her height, she's only just begun growing. (One of my favorite themes. ^__^ ) Then, I'd carry on to tell the story of their friendship developing into something romantic while she learns to adapt to her body's changes. (I'm not sure how far I would take that... Part of me believes she should stop at a 'realistic' mark, below 7'... Whereas again, I'd love to see her keep growing into a height that's more fantasy based.)

Back when I was a Windows user, I was kinda partial to Avast Antivirus myself. Avast+Comodo+AdAware+Firefox+NoScript make something of my security "dream team" for any Windows machines I'm tasked to repair/restore. ^^

Oh,.. and,... uh,... didn't know you had to try a second time. Kinda thought your first time was pretty darn good. ^^'

==========

Surprisingly, I've had to apply that same fanart restraint in the world of OS-tans as well. Despite what my old detractors would say about me and my less-than-enthusiastic views about Microsoft, I was never adverse to drawing Windows-tans, and in fact I've drawn them quite frequently (hey, we met finally over a picture featuring a giant Windows CE-tan... ^^).

But if given the opportunity of volunteering my time to give the oft-ignored Linux-tan a little more exposure, or drawing the 1,795,234th Vista-tan,,... then I guess it's more like me to help the underdog. ^___^'

===========

I see and understand what you mean about height inconsistency, although I admit I can't blame them entirely. I have the luxury of accuracy since I did a still image -- but had this been an animation, I'm sure there would be times where I simply would not want to give a hoot if it means getting things done a little more quickly. ^.^'

3D animation helps in this respect, but it's still extremely hard to get Anime characters to look good as 3D CGI characters (the Otherworld scenes in Clannad come very close, I think).

===========

Fufu... actually, in the series, Risa-san does grow an extra... *drom roll*... 2CM!!! And yes, this DRAMATIC growth spurt almost drives her to slit her wrists with a piece of parsley (figure of speech, but the real reaction is pretty hilarious). -v-;

Given the tendency of Anime characters to look "taller" as adults, I suppose it wouldn't be too unrealistic for Risa-san to creep a little closer to that height bar top (180cm). ^.^

At least there's no fear of Seiko-chan ever catching up and spoiling the comparison; he's pretty much stunted throughout the entire series. -v-

============

Funny you should mention that story idea. Once upon a time, I brainstormed an idea for a graphic visual novel detailing a love story between Anna Haining Swan and a childhood friend/future secret love interest, based loosely on some documentation of her life and people she knew. They would have known eachother very young (6 years old), and while the height difference there was still staggering, the boy would have been unafraid and unperturbed to play with her (unlike all the other children). And while he would grow up only to a less-than-average height, she would continue to grow and grow ultimately reaching her purported peak of 227cm.

And yet while their friendship and love would grow and intensify over the years, culture would always keep them apart, up until her very sad final years.

So given the above, i can only root wholeheartedly for your story which offers a similar [albeit hopefully a much brighter] story. I don't believe many tall young ladies are truly aware that they are very much liked, and that boys and girls alike who might put them down and objectify them so mercilessly do so to compensate for personal inadequacy. -v-

More stories [especially inspiring ones] that address that matter are needed. ^o^

Is it a trap? xD

Regrettably I haven't seen the series, so I can't comment on the characters... but I have to say this is a beautiful drawing none the less! It's unmistakably yours, but there's something different about the style I can't put my finger on.

It MUST be the faces (eyes especially) and hair. I think I see variable-width lines and maybe some gradient lines, but I'm not sure of it.

Very bright and cute all in all!
