Description The first in my series of "ITSATRAP" fanart images, this installment features my favorite characters in one of my favorite Anime series of all times: Lovely Complex . While not exactly the likeliest boy-girl pairing in the series, I've always wanted to see Risa Koizumi and Seiko Kotobuki interact a little more often. Given the lack of such images, I figured I'd follow the age-old adage: "if you want something done right, just do it yourself". ^______^

Being my first TRUE Anime fanart since as far back as the Canalfriend Era, I was initially quite anxious to see how well I could style-match the original Love★Com cel art. That process was slow and lumbering, and while I did eventually succeed I was neither comfortable nor impressed by the results. So I removed the limiter and just drew them with as much "C-quelism"'s as I could afford given the impending biweekly deadline.

Ironically, I think the results are a lot closer to the Love★Com style than the original imitation work, and I had thrice as much fun drawing it! ^___^

Not much else to say about the characters -- fans of the series will surely know them inside out. The one bit of improvisation done was on Seiko-chan's height. Only Risa and Ootani had any listed heights, so I used Ootani's 156cm frame as a template for a highly logical assumption....

Despite his short stature, he's WAY bigger than Risa's friend Nobuko-chan, who in turn is WAY bigger than Seiko-chan; ergo, 144cm.... Makes perfect sense, right? ^____^'

*ducks at the sight of rocks and food items being tossed at him*

Admittedly, some artistic license is in effect, but hopefully it will make the image as enjoyable to view as it was for me to draw. ^v^

Fufu! ^.^

Of course it's a trap... question is, who's the trap? ^__-

Think of it as an interesting social experiment -- one to find out if we're conditioned to always assume that whoever is physically bigger will almost likely be the male. ^____^

I doubt this series is your cup of tea (=romance), but it is very very VERY funny. I may just lend out at last 5 or 6 episodes just to satiate any lingering curiosity. Plus, it's fun to watch a series where EVERY character and their dog talks in Kansai-ben. ^.^

The biggest appropriation from the Lovely Complex style is the ears -- you know I prefer to hide them or keep them overly simple, whereas most of the characters in the Anime proudly display them to the entire world. And while the eye balls have heavy C-quel elements, the way the eye-lashes are done are definitely LoveCom-based, although admittedly I kinda like the effect (especially on Seiko-chan). ^^

Oh and yeah, the hair....

No way would I willingly make hair THAT short. I even elongated Seiko-chan's a bit since I could easily get away with it, but Risa's trademark hair bun style,... well... it was definitely alien to me. ^^

Ironically, she's also shown a lot in the series with her hair down, so I could've just gone that route instead. But I didn't.... maybe deep down inside, I wanted the challenge. ^.^

Variable-width lines are still just optical illusions -- still using overlapping highlights to differentiate strokes, and taper the occasional straight line. But I did make more use of gradients in their hair -- slightly inspired from your Anthro work. ^^

Thank you as always for your support, Bella-sama! ^v^

Oddly, height has always been somewhat irrelevant to me... I never really got people's obsession with it. That being said, I've always liked seeing pairings where people are kinda/sorta in the same height ballpark... ^^'

I doubt it's my cup of tea either, but hey, I'd be willing to check it out after hearing all your raving about it.

(Incedentally, isn't Kansai-ben a more... like... stressed and accented dialect of Japanese?)

And short hair! That's what's so different looking. I don't think I can name a single character you've drawn that had short hair, now that you mention it. And the eyelash style is very cute as well. :3

And I really got to try artificial variable width-lines.

Height as a stimulant has a whole underlying "science" to it that I won't go through. -v-;

But preoccupation with height for social norming, though, should be made invisible, I agree. However, this is far from the case, and height is used to ostracize very tall women or very short men because they fall out of what's perceived to be "normal". Like with any discrimination, a person's appearance are made to outweight his/her worth as a human being, and i won't have it! ^o^

My own preoccupation with it for social reasons stems from my observation that lack of communication fuels the problem. When I was younger, I myself committed the mistake of walking up to a tall stranger and asking her inappropriate and imprudent questions. Years later I would try acting completely oblivious to the fact, but if course it would seem forced and unnatural and would just make them feel less comfortable.

My only successful friendships with tall women came through a healthy combination of normal interaction and open honest dialogue, just like everyone else likes to be treated. They would much rather indulge an answer to the occasional height question to a person who treats them like a human being, than to any of the imprudent freaks they might come across in the streets.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. -.-

Yeah, I'll do everything I can to make sure you watch at least the first few episodes. Lovely Complex perfectly highlights the triumph of honesty and open dialogue (or umebozou singing). ^____^'

And yes, Kansai-ben is like an American Southern accent. It's funny as hell at first, although after a while it just blends in with the rest of the Anime and you barely notice. ^.^

Oh, and right now, I'm seeing printed pictures of Damn Small Linux-tan, eComStation-tan, PalmOS-tan and QDOS-tan. So short hair has been in my repertoire at least.... but I admit it is in the extreme minority. ^^

And so far, no "buns" like Risa-san. ^.^

Want the sauce? Or you can pretty much figure the variable width line thing? I'm sure I did it also on the Christmas pic, so you'll see how to go about it. You might even notice why variable width lines are rarely added to shading parts (short answer is because I'm lazy... ^.^' ).

Thank you. ^^

This is a great series, though. With or without my artwork, I definitely recommend watching the Anime or reading the Manga. ^-^

It looks different from the rest of your works so far but I like it just as much!

The characters have very cute uniforms and great job capturing the height differences between the two!

Thank you Katt-chama. ^.^

From your post on my journal, though, it seems like you fell for the trap... ^___^

But no worries,... they are indeed cute through and through. ^__~

I guess I'll call this a "hybrid" style -- even if I did add in many of my elements (e.g., gradient-assisted hair highlights, eyes), it also has distinct features ported from the original Anime style (e.g., individual eyelashes, eye-nose-mouth placements). In the end I think it was a great compromise, since I was able to be faithful to the original style, while still moving the picture along quickly thanks to doing things I'm used to. ^__^

Oh, and as for the heights, I actually drew these two to scale in Inkscape (you can select the default units in Inkscape via the Document Properties window). That means that, theoretically speaking, I could make life-sized prints of these two if I had a big-enough printer.

[and also if I'm crazy, but that's a separate issue outright... ^.^; ]

Thank you very much, little purple dragon girl. ^__^

If memory serves, I believe this is their summer uniform. In the winter version they wear coats, but still have the same color scheme. ^^
